Lawmaker caught on tape laughing about killing gays<\/a> says he\u2019s the victim of a \u201csocial media lynching\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n

Things aren\u2019t looking so good for Republican Florida state Rep. Mike Hill, and his desperation is starting to show.<\/p>\n

Over the weekend, audio of Hill making the homophobic comments during a forum held by the group Women for Responsible Legislation leaked online.<\/p>\n

In the recording, the 61-year-old lawmaker is heard saying being gay<\/a> is a choice and therefore unworthy of protections in the Civil Rights Act, like those for race and gender.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cMy fundamental problem with that is someone\u2019s sexual orientation or \u2018proclivity\u2019 to want to do something\u2026that is your business,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd it\u2019s a choice. You say \u2018I was born that way.\u2019 Fine. Nobody\u2019s forcing you to engage in that relationship, even if you were born that way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat you do is a behavior and a choice that you have, as opposed to you can\u2019t help your sex<\/a>, your race, your nationality.\u201d<\/p>\n

When a man<\/a> in the crowd calls<\/a> for legislation to fulfill the Biblical \u201cprescription\u201d to put gay<\/a> people to death, Hill laughs then quips: \u201cI wonder how that would go over.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hill\u2019s comments have been denounced by both Democrats and Republicans alike.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Florida House Speaker Jose Oliva and House Rules Chairman Chris Sprowls, who are both Republicans, released a joint statement this week denouncing their colleague.<\/p>\n

\u201cSuch callous indifference to an outrageous question is unacceptable, runs contrary to our founding principles, and in no way reflects the beliefs of the Republican caucus in the Florida House.\u201d<\/p>\n

While they stopped short of calling on Hill to resign, Oliva did say he \u201cowes his colleagues an apology and he owes the Republican caucus a better example of political courage.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Meanwhile, more than 75 people gathered in downtown Pensacola yesterday evening to stage a protest over Hill\u2019s remarks, waving signs calling on Hill to resign and chanting, \u201cThe murder of gays<\/a> is no laughing matter!\u201d<\/p>\n

Leading the march was\u00a0Rodney Jones, president of the NAACP Pensacola branch, who told the crowd, \u201cWe all live<\/a> together as human beings, and for an individual to think that it is funny that one individual within our community is executed or killed is ignorant themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd they have no place in leadership. They have no right to be there because he feels that way about one person who lives in my community, he feels the same way about me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Hill continues to dig in his heels, accusing those against him of a conducing \u201csocial media lynching\u201d against him.<\/p>\n

He followed that up with another tweet this morning that included a link to an article on the right-wing propaganda site\u00a0American Thinker\u00a0<\/em>about how the \u201cLGBT lobby\u201d has \u201cmanufactured outrage\u201d in an effort to bring down Florida\u2019s only two Black republican legislators.<\/p>\n

Then yesterday, Hill hit his local media circuit,\u00a0appearing on two different Pensacola radio stations to call<\/a> the whole situation \u201cabsurd\u201d and to claim the recording of him laughing about killing gay<\/a> people had been \u201ctaken out of context.\u201d<\/p>\n
