Who is he:<\/strong>\u00a0Stage and film actor and disabled activist<\/p>\n

What he\u2019s accomplished:\u00a0<\/strong>Lopez was\u00a0born with a condition that requires the use of a prosthetic leg. He first began doing theater at the age of 10, appearing in children\u2019s theater productions and high school plays.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Later, he appeared on stage in the national tour of \u201cThe 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee\u201d and opposite Daniel Craig and David Oyelowo in the 2016 production of \u201cOthello\u201d at the New York Theatre Workshop, as well as the Shakespeare Theatre Company recent production of \u201cVanity Fair.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2018, Lopez made his big screen debut in the feature film Mapplethorpe<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>playing gay<\/a> activist Jack Fritscher, the founding editor of leather-themed magazine Drummer and Mapplethorpe\u2019s occasional lover,\u00a0in the new Robert Mapplethorpe biopic.<\/p>\n

Why we\u2019re proud: <\/strong>33-year-old Lopez never let his disability get in the way of pursuing his passion and learning complicated stage choreography. He\u2019s an inspiration for aspiring queer artists with disabilities who are looking to pursue a career in the performing arts.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I was younger, I was self-conscious about coming off \u2018too gay<\/a>\u2019,\u201d he told the Washington Blade<\/em> earlier this year. \u201cBut now I realize that fear inhibits my ability to perform and connect with actors, words, and feelings.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cI sometimes have to remind myself not to butch-up. That\u2019s a defense mechanism. As gays<\/a>, it\u2019s kept us safe. But ultimately I\u2019m not<\/em> OK with not being myself.\u201d<\/p>\n

By simply being himself, Lopez found success. And pride.<\/p>\n
