A 38-year-old gay<\/a> man<\/a> recently wrote Slate\u2019s \u201cDear Prudence\u201d advice column<\/a>\u00a0asking whether he\u2019s morally obliged to tell a female<\/a> co-worker that her barely legal 18-year-old son is appearing on an adult cam<\/a> site.<\/p>\n

In his letter, he writes:<\/p>\n

\u201cA few months ago, I found the stream of an 18-year-old guy<\/a> whose routine I liked a lot. \u201cCam\u201d quickly became one of my favorites, and I always tipped generously whenever I saw his show. He didn\u2019t show his face, but his bio mentioned that he\u2019s a high school senior who lives in the same metropolitan area as me and likes daddies\u2026.<\/p>\n

Cam\u2019s voice sounded familiar, but I couldn\u2019t place it. He talked about wanting to show his face on camera<\/a>, and one night he did. I was shocked when I realized he was the son of my co-workers. I\u2019ve known him since he was about 14 via various \u201cfamily night\u201d activities sponsored by my employer. Cam has always been out and proud, and now that he\u2019s of legal age, he\u2019s clearly decided he wants to be\u00a0very\u00a0<\/em>out.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The advice seeker added, \u201cI want to make it clear that I\u2019m\u00a0not<\/em>\u00a0looking for permission to ask him out, have sex<\/a> with him, be his sugar daddy, etc.\u201d Instead, he\u2019s worried that the young man<\/a> might be \u201csetting himself up for trouble down the road, as I know that people record webcammers and post the videos<\/a> all over the internet.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also said that he has stopped watching the young performer as the idea of someone so young on display squicks him out a bit.<\/p>\n

To Prudence\u2019s credit, she finds the 38-year-old\u2019s letter a bit squicky too and tells him to keep his trap shut because voicing his disapproval and reservations won\u2019t help anyone.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou didn\u2019t care about whether the parents of the 18-year-old webcammer you were getting off to knew what he was doing before you realized he was an acquaintance. Nothing\u2019s changed\u2026.<\/p>\n

You\u2019d just be letting him know you don\u2019t respect his boundaries or the implied circle of discretion that surrounds both the streamer and the stream-watcher. Find someone else to watch whose parents you don\u2019t know, continue to tip generously, and move on.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Indeed, as well-meaning as the 38-year-old might be, his letter is a tad ageist and assumes that the young man<\/a> doesn\u2019t know how the internet works. In this day and age of widespread sexting, who hasn\u2019t considered that their sexy times won\u2019t resurface at some later date? Luckily, fewer and fewer people seem to care, unless you\u2019re running for public office (and sometimes not even then).<\/p>\n
