Celebrating Teachers Who Make a Difference this Teacher Appreciation Week<\/b>
\n<\/p>\n

This Teacher Appreciation Week, HRC celebrates educators working to ensure that classrooms and schools are safe, welcoming and inclusive for all children and families. Mitch Klages-Bombich, M.S. Ed., a certified facilitator with HRC Foundation’s Welcoming Schools<\/a>, teaches other educators in New York City about inclusion, acceptance and leadership.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have always been out as a queer-identified person, and I began professionally identifying as transgender in 2014,\u201d Klages-Bombich said. He lives in Staten Island with his wife and their adopted son. Klages-Bombich became a teacher through an alternative certification program after working in social work conducting professional training for staff and volunteers and working with clients. Through his direct work with families, he found that working with kids was something he especially loved.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love that kids are curious and accepting, and I see it with my kindergartener, who gets <\/em>gender identity at an age-appropriate level,\u201d Klages-Bombich said. \u201cMy wife and I are queer. She is a cis-femme, I\u2019m a transgender guy<\/a> and my son\u2019s birth parent is a gender non-binary person.\u201d<\/p>\n

Klages-Bombich taught elementary education for 11 years before joining Positive Learning Collaborative (PLC) in 2013 — a joint initiative of the United Federation of Teachers, which is New York City\u2019s Teachers Union, and the New York City Department of Education that aims to build positive and safe school environments for all students.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen my son\u2019s school attempted to implement inclusive practices by not lining the students up by gender, we talked about what was happening,\u201d he said. \u201cHe shared that there were no more \u2018boys<\/a>\u2019 and \u2018girls<\/a>\u2019 lines but that they were calling it \u2018A\u2019 and \u2018B\u2019 lines — even though they were still split among girls<\/a> and boys<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

So Klages-Bombich asked his son where he and his best friend lined up.<\/p>\n

\u201cBoys line up in the B line and girls<\/a> line up in the A line,\u201d he replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat about Mama?\u201d Klages-Bombich asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s a girl<\/a>, so she would be in the A line,\u201d his son said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat about me?\u201d<\/p>\n

The answer was easy: \u201cBabbo, you are a boy<\/a> now, so the B line.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd what about your Papa?\u201d Klages-Bombich asked, which is how his son refers to his birth parent.<\/p>\n

That answer took longer, Klages-Bombich said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, Papa is both a boy<\/a> and a girl<\/a>, so they wouldn\u2019t have a line,\u201d his son replied. \u201cThat\u2019s not fair. They should always have a space.\u201d<\/p>\n

Conversations like that model the kinds of practices Klages-Bombich helps lead with HRC\u2019s Welcoming Schools and PLC. At a presentation during HRC\u2019s 2017 Time to THRIVE conference<\/a>, Klages-Bombich met a few Welcoming Schools staff and learned about becoming a certified facilitator<\/a> for the program. He completed the initial facilitator training in June 2017 and received his national certification in January this year.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a parent of a five-year-old, I challenge all educators I work with to imagine my child in their classroom,\u201d Klages-Bombich said. \u201cWould my son be able to see himself, his family, the people he loves and those who love him reflected in his school experiences? Would my son and our family feel safe, included and welcomed here?\u201d<\/p>\n
