Rocketman\u2019s Taron Egerton on Kissing a Man Onscreen, His Teenage Gay Questioning, and Being Naked with Richard Madden<\/b><\/p>\n

The Elton John biopic Rocketman<\/em> hits screens on May 31 after premiering at Cannes where actor Taron Egerton is rumored to perform alongside Elton John at the film\u2019s debut. <\/p>\n

Egerton was profiled this week in <\/a>The Hollywood Reporter<\/a><\/em> where he talked about preparing for the film by reading Elton\u2019s old diaries at the icon\u2019s estate, and spoke about how the singer\u2019s receding hairline and front gap tooth were recreated.<\/p>\n

He talked as well about the gay<\/a> sex<\/a> scenes in the film, and playing a gay<\/a> man<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Said Egerton: \u201cFor me, kissing a man<\/a> onscreen is no less appealing than kissing a woman<\/a> onscreen. I\u2019m not in any way repulsed by the male<\/a> form. It\u2019s an uncomfortable thing regardless of who you\u2019re with \u2014 it makes no difference as to your sexual preference.\u201d<\/p>\n

Added Egerton, of straight actors playing gay<\/a> roles: \u201cI have spoken to gay<\/a> people for whom it\u2019s not a problem, and I\u2019ve spoken to gay<\/a> people for whom it is a problem. I completely understand. But for my part, I\u2019m an actor, and I did not get into acting to just play people like me. You have to draw the line somewhere, and I don\u2019t want to live<\/a> in a world where straight people play straight people and gay<\/a> people play gay<\/a> people.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a recent interview with Attitude<\/em> magazine<\/a>, Egerton said that he thought he might be gay<\/a> at one point in his life: \u201cWhen I was 14 or 15, I had a period of thinking I might be gay<\/a> and I spoke to my mother about it. It was part of a period in my life where my mind was figuring things out. You question everything, there are hormones \u2026 It was a very real feeling to me, and I was very panicked and upset about how I would be perceived. That is not the same as going through it for real but there is some understanding of what it might be like, and I remember feeling that acutely.\u201d<\/p>\n

Egerton also spoke of his sex<\/a> scenes with actor Richard Madden, who plays his manager John Reid in the film: \u201cI felt Richard\u2019s penis<\/a> \u2026 on my leg. We shot a scene where we are both naked<\/a> on a bed, and we are rolling around. I don\u2019t really know how much further we could have gone. In the script, this is the scene of Elton losing his virginity and we wanted to try to do that justice, and also at that point their relationship hasn\u2019t broken down yet.\u201d<\/p>\n
