NEW YORK\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 GLAAD, the world\u2019s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, today called attention to the Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce for\u00a0removing its \u201c2019 Person of the Year\u201d webpage<\/a>\u00a0in the midst of the ongoing, international controversy of the Chamber recognizing anti-LGBTQ Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro as its 2019 \u201cPerson of the Year.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prior to this development,\u00a0Delta Airlines<\/a>,\u00a0Bain & Company<\/a>, and\u00a0The Financial Times<\/a><\/em>\u00a0pulled their sponsorships for this event, and the\u00a0American Museum of Natural History<\/a>\u00a0canceled the original location of the Chamber\u2019s event following massive outcry from\u00a0State Senator Brad Hoylman<\/a>\u00a0and LGBTQ Americans and allies \u2013 including\u00a0actor Debra Messing<\/a>. Both GLAAD and State Senator Hoylman have urged the Chamber and New York Marriott Marquis, the event\u2019s new location, to cancel the event that\u2019s scheduled for May 14. And as of this release, about 55,000 individuals<\/a> have signed a petition call<\/a> for the cancelation of the Chamber\u2019s \u201cPerson of the Year\u201d event.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Brazilian-American Chamber\u2019s choice to remove this webpage is an indication that they understand they are on the wrong side of this situation,\u201d said Zeke Stokes, Chief Programs Officer for GLAAD. <\/strong>\u201cThe Chamber cannot hide its connection to the dangerous anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and record of President Jair Bolsonaro at this point, and it must make its views clear and condemn his virulent anti-LGBTQ views that put Brazilians in danger.”\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Brazilian President has a horrific and barbaric anti-LGBTQ record, and since his election last year, President Bolsonaro \u2013 like the Trump Administration \u2013 has\u00a0systematically tried to erase<\/a>\u00a0LGBTQ families from the fabric of Brazil. Just recently, President Bolsonaro even\u00a0praised<\/a>\u00a0the anti-LGBTQ efforts made by President Trump and his administration since taking office in 2017 \u2013 a total of\u00a0105\u00a0attacks<\/a>\u00a0on LGBTQ Americans overall.<\/p>\n
