Breaking News<\/a>: Delta Airlines has pulled its sponsorship of event honoring Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro over his vocal opposition to LGBTQ rights.<\/em><\/p>\n

Forbes, Bank of America, Citi Bank, HSBC, Santander, J.P. Morgan, and others are\u00a0listed as sponsors<\/a>\u00a0for the Brazilian-Chamber\u2019s upcoming gala<\/em><\/p>\n

GLAAD, Hoylman call<\/a> on New York’s Marriott Marquis to Cancel Event<\/em><\/p>\n

The Financial Times<\/a>, Bain & Company, and the\u00a0American Museum of Natural History<\/a>\u00a0have all<\/em>\u00a0withdrawn supportBrazilian-American Chamber of Commerce\u2019s \u201cPerson of the Year\u201d event honoring Bolsonaro<\/em><\/p>\n

NEW YORK\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 GLAAD, the world\u2019s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, and New York\u00a0State Senator Brad Hoylman\u00a0today urged companies to drop their sponsorships\u00a0of the\u00a0upcoming Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce\u201cPerson of the Year\u201d gala<\/a>\u00a0that\u2019s scheduled to occur on May 14 at the New York\u00a0Marriott Marquis<\/a>,\u00a0located in Times Square. Hoylman represents the\u00a0district that includes the Marriott Marquis.<\/p>\n

Already,\u00a0The Financial Times<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>Bain & Company, and\u00a0Delta Airlines<\/a>\u00a0have dropped their sponsorships for the event that was originally scheduled to happen at the American Natural History Museum. The Museum canceled the event’s booking following\u00a0outcry from GLAAD and a\u00a0variety of\u00a0organizations and influencers.\u00a0Actor and LGBTQ advocate Debra Messing<\/a>\u00a0also spoke out against Marriott for booking the event featuring the anti-LGBTQ tyrant.<\/p>\n

The following companies remain as sponsors for the Chamber\u2019s \u201cPerson of the Year\u201d event: Banco Maxima, Bank of America\/Merrill Lynch, Bradesco, Bradesco BBI, BTG Pactual, Credit Suisse, Citi, Febraban, HSBC, Forbes, Ita\u00fa BBA, Safra National Bank, Santander, UBS, Valor, XP Investments, ModalMais, BNY Mellon, Citrus Products Inc, Cosan, First Data, FS, Instituto Ling, JP Morgan, Lide, Mattos Filho, Merrill Money Report, Nelson Wilians, Skadden, United Health Group, ABBC, Modal, Cacique, Delta Bank, Morgan Stanley, S\u00e3o Martinho, Amerra, Banco Do Brasil, BNP Paribas, Campos Mello Advogados, Consulate General of Brazil, Datagro, Diebold Nixdorf, Machado Meyer, Maring\u00e1 Turismo, McLarty Associates, Neoway, Nomura, Refinitiv, Shearman, S&D Sucden, Veritas Capital Management, Funda\u00e7\u0101o Lemann.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s imperative that the companies and organizations associated with this event understand the egregious anti-LGBTQ record and rhetoric of the Brazilian President and stand by LGBTQ people in Brazil and everywhere by withdrawing their support,\u201d\u00a0said Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD<\/strong>. \u201cHis brand of anti-LGBTQ activism is actively harming LGBTQ Brazilians and companies that host or participate in this celebration of him need to take a stand.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCelebrating a man<\/a> who embraces an agenda of open homophobia, misogyny, and racism is a slap in the face to the LGBTQ community. The only award President Bolsonaro has earned is \u2018Bigot of the Year.\u2019 Given President Bolsonaro\u2019s sordid record of public comments, I\u2019m appalled that a business in my district would host an event in support of him, and that other businesses would provide sponsorship,\u201d\u00a0said State Senator Brad Hoylman.<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cI am also deeply concerned about the message such an event would send to these businesses\u2019 employees and New Yorkers in general, including LGBTQ young people, many of whom are struggling with their identity.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Hoylman added<\/strong>, \u201cI urge Marriott and all of this event\u2019s sponsors to withdraw their support for the event immediately. As the only openly LGBTQ member of the State Senate, this is personal for me\u2014and it is especially hurtful that we are fighting against an honor for a notorious homophobe as we approach the 50th anniversary of Stonewall. It\u2019s time for these businesses to decide: do they truly stand for LGBTQ New Yorkers, or are they willing to trade equality for one night of business?\u201d<\/p>\n

Brazilian President has a horrific and barbaric anti-LGBTQ record, and since his election last year, President Bolsonaro \u2013 like the Trump Administration \u2013 has\u00a0systematically tried to erase<\/a>\u00a0LGBTQ families from the fabric of Brazil. Just recently, President Bolsonaro even\u00a0praised<\/a>\u00a0the anti-LGBTQ efforts made by President Trump and his administration since taking office in 2017 \u2013 a total of\u00a0104\u00a0attacks<\/a>\u00a0on LGBTQ Americans overall.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
