{"id":85969,"date":"2019-04-30T16:25:39","date_gmt":"2019-04-30T20:25:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gayfriendschat.com\/socialblog\/hrc-observes-mental-health-awareness-month-2019\/"},"modified":"2019-04-30T16:25:39","modified_gmt":"2019-04-30T20:25:39","slug":"hrc-observes-mental-health-awareness-month-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gayfriendschat.com\/socialblog\/hrc-observes-mental-health-awareness-month-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"HRC Observes Mental Health Awareness Month 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>HRC Observes Mental Health Awareness Month 2019<\/b><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets2.hrc.org\/images\/made\/images\/remote\/https_assets2.hrc.org\/files\/images\/blog\/boy-bullying-youth-1600by900_640_360.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>May is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mentalhealthamerica.net\/may\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mental Health Awareness Month<\/a>, an important opportunity to encourage young people &#8212; especially LGBTQ youth &#8212; to speak openly and honestly about their mental health.<\/p>\n<p>HRC Foundation and the University of Connecticut\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrc.org\/blog\/hrc-uconn-survey-finds-anti-lgbtq-bias-overwhelmingly-affects-LGBTQ-teens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2018 LGBTQ Youth Report<\/a> reaffirmed that, sadly, mental health disparities between LGBTQ youth and non-LGBTQ youth continue to widen, an alarming trend that we must work together to address.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s LGBTQ youth continue to face a variety of stressors\u2014harassment, family and peer rejection, bullying from their peers, isolation and a lack of a sense of belonging\u2014that have a major impact on their overall well-being.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthyyouth\/data\/yrbs\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Studies have shown<\/a> that, compared to their non-LGBTQ peers, LGBTQ youth report much higher rates of depression, anxiety, alcohol and drug use, and lowered self-esteem. And for <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/www.flirt4free.com\/live\/girls\/couples\/?mp_code=akftr\">bisexual<\/a> and gender-expansive youth, as well as young people living at the intersections of multiple marginalized identities, those numbers are even higher.<\/p>\n<p>According to HRC and the University of Connecticut\u2019s research:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>More than three-fourths of <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/www.flirt4free.com\/live\/girls\/couples\/?mp_code=akftr\">bisexual<\/a>, queer, pansexual and fluid-identified youth said they &#8220;usually&#8221; felt feelings of worthlessness or hopelessness over the past week;<\/li>\n<li>Eighty-one percent of <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/www.flirt4free.com\/live\/girls\/couples\/?mp_code=akftr\">bisexual<\/a> respondents said they \u201cusually\u201d felt down or depressed over the past week compared to 71% of <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/www.flirt4free.com\/live\/girls\/?mp_code=akftr\">lesbian<\/a> and <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/chaturbate.com\/in\/?tour=R2Xc&#38;campaign=hl4zp&#38;track=gfcsb\">gay<\/a> youth;<\/li>\n<li>Only 16% of gender-expansive youth always feel safe at school;<\/li>\n<li>Ninety-seven percent of gender-expansive youth said they have trouble sleeping at night;<\/li>\n<li>Four in five LGBTQ youth of color have personally experienced racism;<\/li>\n<li>Just 11% of youth of color surveyed believe their racial or ethnic group is regarded positively in the U.S.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Eighty-five percent of those surveyed by HRC rated their average stress level a \u20185\u2019 or higher on a scale of 10 where \u201810\u2019 was very stressed and \u20181\u2019 was not stressed. This includes 14% of respondents who rated their average stress level as a \u20189\u2019 or higher.<\/p>\n<p>Access to culturally competent, LGBTQ-affirming mental health providers both within schools and in the broader health care system is essential to the well-being of LGBTQ <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/www.flirt4free.com\/live\/girls\/couples\/?mp_code=akftr\">teens<\/a>. Every mental health and medical professional can play a role in changing the landscape for LGBTQ youth by reinforcing inclusive, supportive and loving environments in homes, schools and communities.<\/p>\n<p>We must use Mental Health Awareness Month as a catalyst to start having open, honest discussions about mental health with young people, a key step to reducing stigma and \u00a0empowering them to seek help and support when needed.
