Nigel, 15, is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.waff.com\/2019\/04\/23\/he-was-sunshine-huntsville-mother-discusses-teen-son-who-killed-himself-after-depression-bullying\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">remembered by his mother<\/a>, Camika Shelby, as \u201coutgoing\u201d and \u201calways full of joy, full of light, he was always singing, always dancing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.waff.com\/2019\/04\/23\/he-was-sunshine-huntsville-mother-discusses-teen-son-who-killed-himself-after-depression-bullying\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">interview with WAFF 48 News<\/a>, Shelby said that Nigel had experienced depression and struggled with his identity and bullying at school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want him to be remembered as a kid who was bullied for being <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/chaturbate.com\/in\/?tour=R2Xc&#38;campaign=hl4zp&#38;track=gfcsb\">gay<\/a> and who took his own life,\u201d Shelby said. \u201cHe was so much more than that. He was sunshine. He was just a great spirit to have around and it just breaks my heart because I feel like he had so much more love to give.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Suicide is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.prb.org\/Publications\/Articles\/2016\/suicide-replaces-homicide-second-leading-cause-death-among-us-teens.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the second leading cause of death<\/a> among U.S. <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/www.flirt4free.com\/live\/girls\/couples\/?mp_code=akftr\">teenagers<\/a>, and members of the LGBTQ community are at great risk due to the impact of social stigma, family rejection, bullying, \u00a0stigma, harassment and abuse. Studies show these rates are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/to-your-health\/wp\/2018\/05\/21\/suicide-rates-for-black-children-twice-that-of-white-children-new-data-show\/?noredirect=on&#038;utm_term=.56dc91cd7c12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">increased<\/a> for Black children.<\/p>\n<p>HRC and the University of Connecticut\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrc.org\/resources\/black-and-african-american-lgbtq-youth-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2019 Black and African American LGBTQ Youth Report<\/a> found alarming trends among more than 1,600 respondents, ranging in age from 13 to 17:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>More than 70% of youth \u201cusually\u201d feel worthless or hopeless;<\/li>\n<li>Just 35% of Black and African American LGBTQ youth said they can \u201cdefinitely\u201d be themselves in school;<\/li>\n<li>Forty percent of respondents reported being bullied on school property within the last 12 months;<\/li>\n<li>Two-thirds of Black and African American LGBTQ youth have been verbally assaulted because of their LGBTQ identity &#8212; and nearly one-third have been physically threatened.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Nigel\u2019s story reinforces the need to support and affirm LGBTQ youth &#8212; particularly Black LGBTQ youth and other youth of color. Addressing these startling statistics starts with schools and communities alike working to foster safe and inclusive spaces for LGBTQ young people that also acknowledge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrc.org\/resources\/black-and-african-american-lgbtq-youth-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the impact of historical and contemporary realities of white supremacy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/assets2.hrc.org\/files\/assets\/resources\/HRC_2019_Black_and_African_American_LGBTQ_Youth_Report-FINAL-web.pdf?_ga=2.192590954.1717751190.1555936934-16668192.1529444533\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The combination of discriminatory policies, systems, portrayals and biases<\/a> complicate the ability of Black and African American LGBTQ youth to fully express and explore their intersecting racial and LGBTQ identities at a time that is already confusing and difficult to navigate for so many young people.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrc.org\/resources\/black-and-african-american-lgbtq-youth-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">In building a world where Black and African American youth can thrive<\/a>, we all must dismantle the barriers that deprive them of equal opportunities, dignity and respect.
