A Major Young Character on NBC\u2019s \u2018Good Girls\u2019 Just Came Out as Trans and Mom\u2019s Reaction Was Perfect: WATCH<\/b><\/p>\n

NBC\u2019s dramedy Good Girls<\/em> has been carefully unspooling the gender identity of 11-year-old Sadie (played by Isaiah Stannard, an out trans<\/a> boy<\/a>), the 11-year-old child of Mae Whitman\u2019s character Annie, and last night\u2019s episode was a big one.<\/p>\n

After Annie revealed that Sadie\u2019s stepmother Nancy had a baby (Yay, it\u2019s a boy<\/a>!), Sadie paused and replied, \u201cMom \u2026. so am I.\u201d<\/p>\n

Variety<\/em> reported on the storyline last June<\/a>: \u2018\u201cGood Girls<\/a>\u201d creator Jenna Bans had an eye-opening experience when casting her NBC dramedy. She had originally written Sadie, the tweenage daughter of Mae Whitman\u2019s Annie, as a boy<\/a> named Ben. When her casting director asked if she\u2019d be interested in seeing a girl<\/a> for the part of a boy<\/a>, she was intrigued and hired Izzy Stannard \u2014 a young actor who, at the time, seemed to identify with the female<\/a> gender assigned to him at birth. By the time filming began, Stannard made it clear that he identified as a boy<\/a> and was using he\/him pronouns.\u2019<\/p>\n

Said Bans to the publication: \u201cWe realized we had a really great opportunity to tell a story about a character who was gender non-conforming, but at the same time not necessarily have that be what leads the story. What\u2019s most important to the character and the story we\u2019re telling between Sadie and Annie is really about the bond between Sadie and her mom. We liked the idea that the character of Sadie was exploring her gender [expression] in the show, but I think what we responded to more was that the Mae Whitman character just couldn\u2019t care less.\u2019<\/p>\n
