{"id":84582,"date":"2019-04-17T12:25:28","date_gmt":"2019-04-17T16:25:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gayfriendschat.com\/socialblog\/scotus-rejects-challenge-to-new-jerseys-anti-conversion-therapy-law-for-third-time\/"},"modified":"2019-04-17T12:25:28","modified_gmt":"2019-04-17T16:25:28","slug":"scotus-rejects-challenge-to-new-jerseys-anti-conversion-therapy-law-for-third-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gayfriendschat.com\/socialblog\/scotus-rejects-challenge-to-new-jerseys-anti-conversion-therapy-law-for-third-time\/","title":{"rendered":"SCOTUS Rejects Challenge to New Jersey\u2019s Anti-Conversion Therapy Law for Third Time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>SCOTUS Rejects Challenge to New Jersey\u2019s Anti-Conversion Therapy Law for Third Time<\/b><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets2.hrc.org\/images\/made\/images\/remote\/https_assets2.hrc.org\/files\/images\/blog\/SupremeCourt-1600x900_640_360.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>On Monday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidernj.com\/press-release\/u-s-supreme-court-declines-hear-challenge-new-jerseys-lgbtq-conversion-therapy-ban-garden-state-equality-named-suit-celebrates-courts-decision\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Supreme Court of the United States rejected for the third time a challenge to New Jersey\u2019s 2013 law<\/a> that protects LGBTQ youth from the dangerous and discredited practice of so-called \u201cconversion therapy.\u201d New Jersey was the second state in the nation to prohibit state-licensed health professionals from engaging in these harmful practices with minors.<\/p>\n<p>The challenge was brought by the anti-LGBTQ group Liberty Counsel, which has been designated as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.splcenter.org\/fighting-hate\/extremist-files\/group\/liberty-counsel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hate group<\/a> by the Southern Poverty Law Center. The Court\u2019s action leaves in place the Third Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals\u2019 2014 decision to uphold the law\u2019s constitutionality, ensuring that New Jersey\u2019s law remains in effect.<\/p>\n<p>On two other occasions &#8212; in February 2016 and May 2015 &#8212; the Supreme Court rejected other constitutional challenges to the same New Jersey law, which was the first anti-conversion therapy law enacted under a Republican governor.<\/p>\n<p>Today, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, Nevada, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico all have laws or regulations protecting youth from this harmful practice. Seven of these state laws were enacted under Republican governors. Most recently, Colorado\u2019s legislature <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrc.org\/blog\/colorado-general-assembly-sends-bill-protecting-lgbtq-youth-from-conversion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">passed protections<\/a> against conversion therapy that await enactment. Additionally, a growing number of municipalities have enacted similar protections, including at least fifty cities and counties in Arizona, Florida, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Washington and Wisconsin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrc.org\/resources\/the-lies-and-dangers-of-reparative-therapy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Conversion therapy<\/a>,\u201d sometimes referred to as \u201csexual orientation change efforts\u201d or \u201creparative therapy,\u201d is a range of practices that seek to change an individual\u2019s sexual orientation or gender identity. These practices are rooted in the false premise that being LGBTQ is a mental illness that needs to be \u201ccured\u201d &#8212; a theory that has been resoundingly rejected by every major medical and mental health organization. Research by groups including the American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychological Association and the American Medical Association has clearly shown that these practices pose devastating health risks for LGBTQ young people, leading to depression, decreased self-esteem, substance abuse, homelessness and even suicidal behavior.<\/p>\n<p>More information on the false claims and dangers
