GLAAD CEO: \u201cIt’s morally wrong, it’s unpatriotic, and make no mistake – it’s not just discriminatory, it is damaging. It compromises readiness, good order, and discipline in our armed forces.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

NEW YORK \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>GLAAD, the world\u2019s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, today issued the following statement denouncing President Donald Trump’s ban on transgender Americans openly serving in our nation\u2019s armed services. Trump\u2019s directive will be implemented on Friday, April 12.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a dark day for our nation’s military and the more than 13,000 brave transgender service members who are putting their lives on the line to protect the freedoms we hold so dear. It’s morally wrong, it’s unpatriotic, and make no mistake – it’s not just discriminatory, it is damaging. It compromises readiness, good order, and discipline in our armed forces.\u201d\u00a0said Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ellis continued<\/strong>, \u201cThis systematic erasure by President Trump and his administration is a national disgrace, and we will not be silent, nor will we forget. Equality and acceptance are only made possible when we speak up and fight back. We will continue to do just that, no matter who is in the White House. And we will reverse this discriminatory attack on our military.\u201d<\/p>\n

GLAAD has asked all LGBTQ Americans and allies to show support for the trans<\/a> community by changing their profile photos on social media to the\u00a0imagine of the trans pride flag<\/a>.\u00a0So far, celebrities like Laverne Cox<\/a>, Peppermint<\/a>, Asia Kate Dillon<\/a>, and Ben Stiller<\/a> and former Michigan governor Jennifer Granholm<\/a> have all participated so far in this campaign.<\/p>\n

Currently, more than 13,000 transgender service members would experience a direct impact on the ban, and more than\u00a0fifty-six retired generals and admirals<\/a>\u00a0have opposed the Trump Administration\u2019s directive. Not only has GLAAD condemned the administration\u2019s attempt to prevent transgender Americans from serving the United States, but GLAAD also\u00a0supported the\u00a0production and publicity of\u00a0TransMilitary<\/em><\/a>, a documentary which tells\u00a0the stories about the brave trans<\/a> soldiers currently our country.\u00a0GLAAD presented\u00a0a copy of the documentary<\/a>\u00a0to every member of the U.S. House Subcommittee on Military Personnel ahead of the subcommittee\u2019s hearing on the topic on February 27.\u00a0TransMilitary<\/em>\u00a0is now available on\u00a0iTunes<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Amazon<\/a>.<\/p>\n
