Chasten Buttigieg Addresses HRC Gala: \u2018Peter is Ready to Serve Our Country and America is Ready for Him\u2019 \u2014 WATCH<\/b><\/p>\n

Chasten Buttigieg, the husband of South Bend mayor and presidential hopeful Pete Buttigieg, spoke at the Human Rights Campaign dinner in Houston, Texas on Saturday night.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo I\u2019ve had a busy couple<\/a> months,\u201d Buttigieg began. \u201cNever underestimate what can happen when you agree to go on a date with a cute guy<\/a> from South Bend, Indiana.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI now live<\/a> in a world where people take photos of me in the deodorant aisle at the grocery store,\u201d he added. \u201cBut it is not lost on me that I was able to marry the man<\/a> I love by the grace of one Supreme Court vote.\u201d<\/p>\n

Buttigieg then joked about the historic nature of his position, drawing cheers: \u201cI could be the first man<\/a> in history to pick out the White House china.\u201d<\/p>\n

Buttigieg said that he moved out of his home in Traverse City, Michigan shortly after coming out to his parents.<\/p>\n

\u201cEventually, I thought to myself, \u2018I can\u2019t be here any more.\u2019 So I moved out, without a plan. I was scared, living between my car and friends\u2019 couches.\u201d<\/p>\n

Buttigieg, who said he\u2019s since developed a good relationship with his parents, talked about finding community, and a teacher who saved him by allowing him to sleep in the school auditorium when he needed to. That teacher inspired Buttigieg to become a teacher himself, he said.<\/p>\n

Buttigieg talked about the importance of passing the Equality Act, which would enshrine LGBTQ protections in the Constitution under existing civil rights laws, and praised HRC for the work it has done over the years.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need someone in the White House who will sign the Equality Act into law, and luckily I know a guy<\/a>,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy husband Pete Buttigieg \u2013 you can call<\/a> him Mayor Pete \u2013 was commissioned as a naval intelligence officer when \u2018Don\u2019t Ask, Don\u2019t Tell\u2019 was still the law of the land,\u201d he continued. \u201cAnd served a seven month tour in Afghanistan when a certain vice president was governor of his home state.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPeter is ready to serve our country in the highest office, and just as importantly I think America is ready for him,\u201d Buttigieg added.<\/p>\n

\u201cOver the last three months of traveling the country at his side, meeting people from all walks of life, we have discovered that people are united in protecting our values of freedom, Democracy and security. Especially<\/em> freedom to live<\/a> an authentic life regardless of who you love or how you identify.\u201d<\/p>\n
