NEW YORK \u2013\u00a0GLAAD, the world\u2019s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, expressed its disapproval of the University of Texas Board of Regents’ decision today to name Heather Wilson as the next president of the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). The selection occurred amid disturbing news reports<\/a> exposed Wilson\u2019s anti-LGBTQ record as well as a bombshell report<\/a> suggesting\u00a0Wilson\u00a0used the power of her political office to cover up a sex<\/a> abuse allegation involving her husband and a minor.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe decision to select Heather Wilson as UTEP\u2019s president without holding a public hearing about her disturbing past is a failure in process and transparency and a disservice to the students, faculty, and alumni of the University of Texas,\u201d said Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD. \u201cLGBTQ students should never have to question whether their University president supports them, and Heather Wilson’s appointment is a slap in their face.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prior Wilson\u2019s election, GLAAD joined supporters of UTEP, its students, and the El Paso community \u2013\u00a0including 2020 presidential candidate Beto O\u2019Rourke<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 to reject\u00a0Heather\u00a0Wilson\u00a0after research showed a\u00a0disturbing anti-LGBTQ record<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0Wilson, including her vote against The Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act in 2007.\u00a0Student groups and advocates<\/a> issued a public campaign against\u00a0Heather\u00a0Wilson\u00a0since being named the \u201csole finalist\u201d for the UTEP vacancy.\u00a0<\/p>\n

GLAAD has followed Heather Wilson since she was appointed to serve in the Trump Administration in 2017. Through the\u00a0Trump Accountability Project (TAP)<\/a>, GLAAD has recounted all attacks the Trump Administration has made against LGBTQ Americans in policy and rhetoric, totaling up 99 attacks on LGBTQ Americans since taking office.
