Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel Blasts Jussie Smollett on CNN, Calls Dropped Charges an \u2018Abomination\u2019 \u2014 WATCH<\/b><\/p>\n

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel joined CNN\u2019s Wolf Blitzer after expressing outrage earlier on Tuesday that charges had been dropped in the Jussie Smollett case.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt makes no legal sense,\u201d said Emanuel. \u201cIt makes no common sense. And this is an abomination of my sense of justice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Added Emanuel: \u201cHe went out and spoke on ABC to the country, as an African American and a gay<\/a> man<\/a>, about being the victim of a crime\u2026 It was all a hoax and a moral violation. \u2026 He used the hate crime laws to advance his own career and he got caught.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHere is my basic anger,\u201d Emanuel added. \u201cThere is no sense from this person who now, the state\u2019s attorney said, committed the crime, or actually the hoax. But he\u2019s walking around like he\u2019s exonerated, with no sense of remorse or contrition\u2026He gets off with two days of community service.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe used those [anti-hate crime] laws and those sentiments that bind us together as a society, to promote his own career, and then he\u2019s walking around as if he\u2019s done nothing wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n

Emanuel continued his tirade against the actor, saying, \u201cIf he was anybody else, and this is what\u2019s upsetting people in the city and around the country \u2014 he has one law or one kind of standard of accountability and everybody else gets another, and that\u2019s wrong. \u2026 Everybody thinks if you\u2019re in a position of power or position of influence, there\u2019s two rulebooks: One for everybody else and one for the people of influence. \u2026 This is a horrible example of \u2014 if he wasn\u2019t an actor, do you think two days of community service would be enough?\u201d<\/p>\n

Emanuel continued: \u201c[If] we found out I put [a swastika] on the door for \u2026 my own career or you for your own career, put that out, do you think two days of community service [and] the slate would be clean? \u2026 The fact is he\u2019s walking away, no remorse, no contrite, doesn\u2019t believe he did anything wrong and used the hate crime laws to advance his own career and got caught and his entire penalty become to society is two days of community service. It\u2019s just not right.\u201d<\/p>\n

Former Obama adviser David Axelrod agreed with sentiments that the case is totally shady.<\/p>\n

Wrote Axelrod on Twitter: \u201cThis is a total head-scratcher. After all that has transpired interesting to hear the prosecutor\u2019s rationale for kicking a case that seemed very clear. Will they now bring assault charges against the two brothers who admitted to staging the attack for money at Smollett\u2019s behest. Or charges for lying to the police? Someone wasn\u2019t being truthful here and the City of Chicago paid the price. \u2026 Unless some better explanation surfaces, here\u2019s the lesson of this weird turn in the Smollett case: You can contrive a hate crime, make it a national news, get caught and-if you are a well-connected celebrity-get off for $10K and have your record expunged and files sealed. No. Sorry, folks. The brief statement offered by the prosecutor didn\u2019t dispute the basic facts in the original charge. That\u2019s why he was compelled to sacrifice his bond. They simply said that in light of his voluntary work in the community, this was a just resolution. Hate crimes are loathsome. Faking them is insidious and shouldn\u2019t be excused. Despite Smollett\u2019s denials, nothing the prosecutor said in dismissing the case supports that. If prosecutors have evidence that contradicts the indictment THEY brought, they should share it today.\u201d<\/p>\n

Smollett repaid the city $10k, ostensibly as an offset for the investigation his phony charges ignited that cost the City of Chicago in the millions.
It really is outrageous.<\/p>\n
