Trevor Noah Talks with \u2018Gender-Chill\u2019 Author Jacob Tobia About Their New Book \u2018Sissy\u2019 \u2014 WATCH<\/b><\/p>\n

Trevor Noah sat down with Jacob Tobia, a transgender author whose new book Sissy: A Coming-of-Gender Story<\/em><\/a> tackles trans<\/a> identity.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Sissy\u2019 was the first name I had to name my difference,\u201d Tobia tells Noah. \u201cI didn\u2019t know the word \u2018transgender\u2019 when I was a kid. I didn\u2019t even know the word \u2018gay<\/a>\u2019 as early as I knew that \u2018sissies\u2019<\/em>, people who were gender-different, was a thing. The whole point of this book for me is to really excavate the story of my gender and really not take any part of it for granted. Naming it Sissy<\/em> is really just reclaiming my childhood for myself and learning to snatch back the power from people who try to be like, \u2018you really shouldn\u2019t be like that.\u2019 And you can just be like, \u2018if you think you\u2019re gonna tease me with that name it\u2019s the title of my damn book now, so sorry.\u2019<\/p>\n

Tobia also explained that they\u2019re \u201cgender-chill.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cI want to think about, what is the future we want to build for trans<\/a> folks. What is the future that I want to live<\/a> in? The future that I want to live<\/a> in is not some future where there\u2019s no gender and everyone wears gray hoodies and sweatshirts and shaves their head. I want to live<\/a> in a world where gender is this playful thing \u2013 where there\u2019s no patriarchy and no misogyny and none of the things that make gender suck, and only the things that make gender great. I want it to feel like a dress up bin.\u201d <\/p>\n

Tobia went on to explain on why they empathize with folks who hate trans<\/a> people.<\/p>\n
