Trump Circuit Court Nominee Kenneth Lee Grilled About Writings on Gay People, AIDS: WATCH<\/b><\/p>\n

In a confirmation hearing on Wednesday, Senator Dianne Feinstein grilled Kenneth Lee, a Trump judicial nomination for the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, about 1994 college writings in which he said that \u201c9 out of 10 people with AIDS are gay<\/a> or drug users.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lee \u201csaid his writings were a \u2018misguided attempt\u2019 to support the Reagan administration\u2019s policy on HIV,\u201d NBC News reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Said Lee: \u201cI absolutely would not write that today. I truly regret writing that. Frankly as an 18 year old I didn\u2019t know anything. I didn\u2019t know science. I was parroting something. Looking at that now, 26 years later, I am just embarrassed by it\u2026Over the years you gain more empathy\u2026different people you meet as well. I personally know someone living with that disease\u2026thinking about him read something I wrote as an 18-year-old is just mortifying, frankly.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Lee responded \u201cabsolutely not\u201d when asked by Senator Richard Blumenthal, in reference to another piece of writing, \u201cDo you think that discrimination or oppression against LGBTQ people is merely a \u2018Marxist paradigm?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

NBC News adds<\/a>: \u2018In a 1994 article titled \u201cGay Office Opens,\u201d Lee opposed the opening of an LGBTQ resource center on campus, saying it was not necessary because the school was already funding LGBTQ groups. He called the decision to open the office \u201cmore political than anything\u201d and said that it was to appease \u201cmilitant\u201d student activists who had been denied a gay<\/a> dorm. In another article from 1994, he bashed AIDS education posters in the cafeteria as \u201cpropaganda nearly as pernicious to your health as the food,\u201d while declaring that \u201cpersonal responsibility\u201d \u2014 in lieu of hopelessly placing \u201cour faith on a vaccine\u201d \u2014 was needed to solve the HIV epidemic. He also wrote \u201chomosexuals are generally more promiscuous than heterosexuals\u201d and \u201cto avoid AIDS, one has to only abstain from drug-use and promiscuity. So simple, yet so hard to grasp.\u201d\u2019<\/p>\n

A vote on Lee\u2019s confirmation has yet to be scheduled.<\/p>\n
