Activists Work To Say Bye-Bye to Bi Health Disparities<\/b>

As we work to address anti-LGBTQ bias and discrimination in the health care system, it\u2019s imperative to understand the specific needs of people who identify as bisexual<\/a> \u2014 or bi<\/a>+, an umbrella term that also includes queer, pansexual or fluid identities. <\/em><\/p>\n

Even after 42 years identifying as bisexual<\/a>, coming out as bi<\/a> remains a difficult experience for international speaker Robyn Ochs.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am part of a community that faces serious health disparities,\u201d Ochs, who is also the editor of Bi Women Quarterly<\/em><\/a> and of two anthologies, told Equality<\/em>. \u201cTo this day, I fear that when I come out to them as bi<\/a>, people will see me differently, that they will perceive me in a negative light and that their stereotypes about my bisexuality will become the only thing they see and an obstacle to our interactions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Experiences among bi<\/a>+ people in health care settings remain rarely discussed by community organizers, medical professionals and researchers, but activists like Ochs and Lauren Beach are working to change that. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe biggest challenge to researching bi<\/a>+ health issues is simple: biphobia,\u201d Beach, an LGBTQIA health researcher at Northwestern University and a co-founder of the Chicago Bisexual Health Task Force, told Equality<\/em>. \u201cThat answer, of course, begs the question, \u2018How does biphobia present a challenge to bi<\/a>+ health research?\u2019\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n

As March marks Bisexual Health Awareness Month<\/a>, Beach said that it is important to address the biphobia that contributes to the health disparities bi<\/a>+ people experience.<\/p>\n

\u201cBiphobia leads people to think that bisexual<\/a> people either don\u2019t exist or that bisexual<\/a> populations do not experience health disparities,\u201d Beach said.<\/p>\n

HRC Foundation’s own research shows that bi+ people face striking rates of<\/a> poor health outcomes ranging from cancer and obesity, to sexually transmitted infections to mental health problems.<\/p>\n

Moreover, transgender people and people of color comprise large portions of the bisexual community<\/a>, making these groups vulnerable to further disparities that occur at the intersections of biphobia, racism and transphobia.<\/p>\n

\u201cUntil very recently, reporting on disparities in risk behaviors and health outcomes for LGBTQ people either bundled bi<\/a>-identified people in with lesbian<\/a> and gay<\/a> people or it excluded bi<\/a>-identified people from reports,\u201d Ochs said. \u201cBut now we have evidence and it is clear there is great need, and much that needs to be done.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Beach, it’s imperative that advocates realize that bisexual<\/a> people are everywhere and that the “beautiful diversity of who we are” is visible in media and beyond.<\/p>\n

\u201cIntersectionality isn\u2019t optional in these pursuits,\u201d Beach said. \u201cIntersectionality is the reality. Bi+ people and community organizations need allies to help us gain the support that is needed to broadcast these realities to each other and to the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Beach said that building a supportive, inclusive community is one of the most important ways to address biphobia and start to chip away at the stigma bisexual<\/a> people face both inside and outside the LGBTQ community.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf someone says they are bisexual<\/a>, they are bisexual<\/a>,\u201d Beach said. \u201cBeing a true ally to bisexual<\/a> people means that you should be ready to push back against biphobia, not only from straight people, but also from gay<\/a>, lesbian<\/a> and other LGBTQ people.\u201d<\/p>\n
