GLAAD Calls on President Trump to Launch Global Race to Find Cure for HIV and AIDS<\/b><\/p>\n

Global effort led by U.S. would build on President\u2019s commitment to ending HIV transmissions domestically by 2030<\/em><\/p>\n

NEW YORK<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 GLAAD \u2013 the world\u2019s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization \u2013 today called on President Donald Trump to make a bold new\u00a0pledge for the United States of America to\u00a0lead the way in\u00a0finding a safe cure for HIV and AIDS. This pledge, aimed at starting a global race to find a cure for HIV and AIDS, would solidify the Trump Administration\u2019s\u00a0domestic campaign to\u00a0end HIV transmissions<\/a>\u00a0in the United States by 2030. GLAAD\u2019s action follows news reports of a second human now\u00a0being declared cured of HIV and AIDS<\/a>\u00a0by researchers in Seattle.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHIV and AIDS\u00a0should\u00a0never be a political issue, and the United States of America must\u00a0lead the way on finding a cure. The President made a bold commitment in his State of the Union, and we intend to hold him to his pledge and push him, this Administration, and future administrations harder to do more and to do it faster. President Trump must back his words with action,\u201d\u00a0said Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO at GLAAD.<\/strong><\/p>\n

GLAAD has asked the media to hold President Trump and his administration accountable after reports suggested that the President will seek to \u201cend\u00a0HIV\u00a0transmissions by 2030<\/a>.<\/u>\u201d However, as the research showed, the Administration has rolled back funding of research that seeks to find a cure and better treatment, as well as added to the stigma faced by people living with\u00a0HIV<\/u>.\u00a0The Trump Administration\u00a0also announced<\/a>\u00a0a global effort last month to decriminalize homosexuality worldwide, a campaign President Trump\u00a0knew nothing about<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Since taking office, the Trump Administration has\u00a0unleashed more than 95 attacks against LGBTQ\u00a0Americans\u00a0in policy and rhetoric, which includes\u00a0shutting down<\/a>\u00a0an HIV and AIDS research facility in Montana and\u00a0firing<\/a>\u00a0the White House Presidential Advisory Council on HIV\/AIDS.\u00a0GLAAD\u2019s\u00a0Trump Accountability Project (TAP)<\/a>\u00a0has catalogued every anti-LGBTQ action by this administration, available at\u00a0www.glaad.org\/trump<\/a>.<\/p>\n
