Even if you\u2019re not in the market for a charming prince, the UK\u2019s blend of rich history, pastoral wonder and cosmopolitan thrills is enough to lure anyone across the pond.<\/p>\n Performing arts aficionados in particular should start packing. London has an arts and theatre scene so vibrant and diverse, it\u2019s widely considered the best in the world. (And that\u2019s coming from a diehard New Yorker.)<\/p>\n Learn how to navigate London\u2019s arts scene like a pro with our guide below.<\/p>\n The crown jewel of London\u2019s performing arts scene is the renowned West End. Also known as Theatreland, the theatre district includes about 40 venues showcasing the biggest productions for large audiences<\/a>. Many of the gorgeous, historic theaters date back to the late-Victorian and Edwardian eras, featuring stunning architecture and luxurious interiors.<\/p>\n This year is a particularly exciting time for theater fans to visit the West End. Many of Broadway\u2019s biggest hits (and toughest tickets to score) are opening in London \u2014 often at a fraction of the price of the Great White Way.<\/p>\n Tony and Grammy Award-winning musical Dear\u00a0Evan\u00a0Hansen<\/a><\/em> is coming to the Noel Coward Theatre (dates and cast to be announced). Smash<\/em> star Katharine McPhee will reprise her role in Waitress<\/a><\/em> at the Adelphi Theatre through May 25. The beloved musical 9\u00a0to\u00a05<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>is at the Savoy Theatre through August.<\/p>\n If you\u2019re looking for big stars, you\u2019ll find them in London. Broadway legend Patti Lupone appears in Company<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>at the Gielgud Theatre through March 30. The show features several notable gender swaps, including newlyweds \u201cAmy\u201d and \u201cPaul\u201d portrayed as gay<\/a> couple<\/a> \u201cJamie\u201d and \u201cPaul.\u201d<\/p>\n There\u2019s plenty of star-studded plays as well. John Malkovich will star as a Harvey Weinstein-esque monster in the David Mamet dark farce Bitter\u00a0Wheat<\/a><\/em> June 7 to Sept. 14 at the Garrick Theatre. It will mark Malkovich\u2019s return to the stage after 33 years. Also returning to the London stage for the first time in 12 years, Dame Maggie Smith stars in Christopher Hampton\u2019s solo show <\/a>A\u00a0German\u00a0Life<\/a><\/em>, April 6 through May 11.<\/p>\n It\u2019s a gay<\/a> icon extravaganza when Lily James (Mamma\u00a0Mia!\u00a0Here\u00a0We\u00a0Go\u00a0Again<\/em>) and Gillian Anderson (X-Files<\/em>) tackle the classic All\u00a0About\u00a0Eve<\/a><\/em>. Performances are scheduled at the Noel Coward Theatre through May 11.<\/p>\n And speaking of icons, the late Whitney Houston will be paid tribute in a stunning concert production Whitney\u00a0\u2014\u00a0Queen\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0Night<\/a><\/em> March 24 and June 2 at the Savoy Theatre.<\/p>\n In addition to all the exciting theatre coming in 2019, the West End is home to the longest-running production in the world, The Mousetrap,<\/a><\/em> at St. Martin\u2019s Theater<\/a>. The show has run continuously since 1952. The longest-running musical in the West End is Les Miserables<\/em>. That show will end its run at the Queen\u2019s Theatre<\/a> this year in July to allow for renovations, moving for a few months to the Gielgud Theatre<\/a> and then returning to Queen\u2019s Theatre in December with a new company and the 2009 production created for the show\u2019s 25th Anniversary.<\/p>\n Other long-running crowd-pleasers include The Lion King<\/a><\/em> <\/a>(closing in June), Wicked<\/a><\/em> (closing in November), Mamma Mia<\/a><\/em> (closing in September) and The Book of Mormon<\/a><\/em> (closing in April). TINA \u2013 The Tina Turner Musical<\/a><\/em> made its world premiere in London and runs at the Aldwych Theatre through the end of the year. Upcoming productions include Mary Poppins<\/a><\/em> returning to the Prince Edward Theatre in October and Fiddler On the Roof<\/a><\/em>, opening in March.<\/p>\n The Royal National Theatre<\/a> is the United Kingdom\u2019s publicly funded flagship theater, containing the Olivier, Dorfman and Lyttelton theaters. A-list stars often showcase their dramatic chops here, including out actor Denis O\u2019Hare (True Blood<\/em>, American Horror Story<\/em>) starring in Tartuffe<\/a><\/em> through April. Take advantage of the 75-minute backstage tour, or spend two hours visiting wardrobe and wig teams working on the costume tours. There are also talks and workshops offered.<\/p>\n Of course, if you\u2019re on the hunt for something less traditional (and less expensive), there\u2019s thriving theatre outside the West End. Be the first to see new work or rediscover old classics within the intimate Finborough Theatre<\/a>. Find gripping drama at Ovalhouse<\/a> or catch a show at the Menier Chocolate Factory<\/a>. <\/p>\n There are few better incubators for new work than Bush Theatre\u00a0<\/a> (showcasing LGBTQ piece And\u00a0the\u00a0Rest\u00a0of\u00a0Me\u00a0Floats<\/em> Feb. 20-March 16), while the best emerging companies can regularly be found at the Southwark Playhouse<\/a>. Get an even deeper glimpse into the artistic process at the Battersea Arts Centre<\/a>, where work is performed at various states of development to gain audience input. Currently, Battersea is featuring No\u00a0Kids<\/em>, a show about deciding not to have children from real-life same-sex<\/a> couple<\/a> George and Nir. You can often find LGBTQ-themed content at Above the Stag<\/a> (the only full-time professional LGBTQ theater in the United Kingdom), Royal Vauxhall Tavern<\/a> and King\u2019s Head Theatre<\/a>.<\/p>\n Adventurous theater patrons can find various fringe theatre at OffWestEnd.com<\/a>. However, there are other ways to make your theatre-going more enjoyable. Swing by the TKTS booth in Leicester Square<\/a> for last-minute tickets to West End shows. Many theaters also offer \u201crelease\u201d tickets the day of the show, typically for front-row seats, but it may require you to \u201cqueue\u201d up early in the morning. Call the box office and find out the theater\u2019s policy.<\/p>\n Beyond theatre, London offers world-class opera and dance as well.
