Kamala Harris: \u2018Sex Work Ought to Be Decriminalized\u2019<\/b><\/p>\n

California Senator Kamala Harris recognizes how the criminalization of sex<\/a> work perpetuates stigma and leads to more criminal behavior and the silencing of victims.<\/p>\n

Which is why she agreed when asked that sex<\/a> work should be decriminalized.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is an ecosystem around that that includes crimes that harm people, and for those issues I do not believe that anybody who hurts another human being or profits off their exploitation should be free of criminal prosecution,\u201d she told <\/a>The Root<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

For Harris, who has been widely criticized for her support of SESTA (The Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act of 2017) and FOSTA (Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act of 2017), her willingness to explore decriminalization may be welcome news.<\/p>\n

But some think she\u2019s taking the position to solidify her progressive base but won\u2019t actually act on it.<\/p>\n

\u201cHer progressive achievements and championing for the underprivileged are completely overshadowed by her hostile initiatives against sex<\/a> workers,\u201d Lee Jennings, the CEO of online sex<\/a> worker directory Slixa, told <\/a>The Daily Beas<\/a><\/em>t.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Harris\u2019 call<\/a> to decriminalize sex<\/a> work came as New York state works to introduce a bill to do just that in the Empire State.<\/p>\n

\u201cDecriminalization is critical to protecting the rights and safety of people who trade sex<\/a>, no matter where they are on the spectrum of choice, circumstance, and coercion,\u201d\u00a0NY State senator Brad Hoylman tweeted Monday.<\/p>\n

An activist collective called DecrimNY<\/a>, is working with them to \u201cdecriminalize, decarcerate and destigmatize the sex<\/a> trade in New York City and state,\u201d according to its website.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe mere introduction of decriminalization legislation marks a major and hard-won point of progress in the public discussion around sex<\/a> workers\u2019 rights, said <\/a>The Intercept<\/a><\/em>.<\/a> \u201cIt is a welcome statement for those who have been long disappointed in politicians with allegedly progressive agendas standing on the wrong side of history when it comes to sex<\/a> workers\u2019 rights.\u201d<\/p>\n
