Hartney is currently doing  musical improv with Rumpleteaser, and in the past he\u2019s directed running shows <em>Pop Stars Are Dumb (But We Love Them)<\/em> and <em>Shkreli! Portrait of a Pharma Bro<\/em>. <\/p>\n<p>Hartney was one of 2016\u2019s Comedy Central Comics to Watch, and did the 2018 NBC Late Night Writers Workshop, as well as performing in the New Faces \u2013 Characters showcase at the 2018 Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal. <\/p>\n<p>Hartney\u2019s TV credits include <em>The Break With Michelle Wolf<\/em>, <em>30 Rock<\/em>, and <em>The Who Was? Show<\/em>. He was also a staff writer on TV Land\u2019s late night show <em>Throwing Shade<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Towleroad<\/em> spoke to Hartney.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TLRD: How long have you been doing this? And when did you start?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>MH: I\u2019ve been the Artistic Director for just a few months. I started after Labor Day last year. I\u2019ve been doing comedy in NYC for 16 years. I took my first\u00a0UCB\u00a0class in 2003, joined my first\u00a0UCB\u00a0house team in 2009, and started teaching at\u00a0UCB\u00a0in 2012.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do you plan to shape the<br \/>\nfuture of\u00a0UCB?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This question is<br \/>\nmassive! To me, the\u00a0UCB\u00a0Theatre is like the Group Theatre in the 30\u2019s<br \/>\nand our training center is like the Strasberg Institute, only for comedy. We<br \/>\nuse a system, a method, that works. Everything we do here revolves around a<br \/>\nconcept called The Game of the Scene, and to me, that\u2019s what sets us apart from<br \/>\nthe pack. Shows and performers come and go, but Game is our constant. So when<br \/>\nI\u2019m in front of my cauldron in my wizard hat, shaping the future of this place,<br \/>\nthat\u2019s at the front of my mind. What I\u2019m excited about for the future is the<br \/>\nevolving makeup of our theatre. When I first began seeing shows and taking<br \/>\nclasses at\u00a0UCB, there were literally two <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/chaturbate.com\/in\/?tour=R2Xc&#38;campaign=hl4zp&#38;track=gfcsb\">gay<\/a> performers. Two. There were<br \/>\nvery few <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/www.flirt4free.com\/live\/girls\/?mp_code=akftr\">women<\/a> and people of color on teams. And though we still have a long,<br \/>\nlong way to go, it also feels good to acknowledge that we\u2019ve come a long way<br \/>\ntowards representing diverse voices at\u00a0UCB. A cool thing that is happening<br \/>\nright now is what I <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/chaturbate.com\/in\/?tour=grq0&#38;campaign=hl4zp&#38;track=gfcsb\">call<\/a> \u201cidentity\u201d shows: shows with all-queer,<br \/>\nall-Asian, all-South Asian casts, etc. That\u2019s exciting and it\u2019s bringing new<br \/>\nfaces to our theatre both onstage and in the audience. Seven nights in a row of<br \/>\nthe same type of show is boring; seeing just how many different ways game can<br \/>\nbe played from so many different POVs (PsOV?) is positively thrilling.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why is improv<br \/>\nimportant?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Studying\/practicing improv keeps your mind sharp, your senses engaged, and your heart open. Watching it just makes you laugh.
