How the Classic Sitcom \u2018Married With Children\u2019 Took On Gay Marriage in a Surprisingly Sensitive Way: WATCH<\/b><\/p>\n

In a new episode of Cultural Cruising<\/em>, Matt Baume examines the classic sitcom Married With Children<\/em> which took on gay<\/a> marriage in an episode that aired in October 1990, a little more than three years into its decade-long run.<\/p>\n

Said Baume: \u201cThough it was primarily concerned with the mating habits of heterosexuals, or lack thereof, the show touched on LGBT life now and then with surprising sensitivity. And even more surprisingly, it went so far as to air an episode featuring two married gay<\/a> men<\/a>, just two months before a real-life lawsuit kicked off the modern marriage equality movement.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the episode, Peg (Katey Sagal) is bored and wants to go out. Al (Ed O\u2019Neill) isn\u2019t interested, so Peg goes out with her friend Marcy (Amanda Bearse, who, as Baume notes, later came out as a lesbian<\/a>). Peg and Marcy head to a dance club where Peg finds a dance partner named Andy. <\/p>\n

At home, Al gets a knock at the door from a man<\/a> who tells him \u201cyour wife has been seeing my husband.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYour husband<\/em>?\u201d Al asks, confounded.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d replies the man<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know you\u2019re a guy<\/a><\/em>, right?\u201d replies Al.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d replies the man<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Responds Al: \u201cWell then we got three guys<\/a> who won\u2019t touch my wife, what\u2019s the problem?\u201d<\/p>\n

Baume points out that at the time this episode was shot, marriage equality wasn\u2019t recognized anywhere in the world, yet the show still used the word \u201chusband.\u201d<\/p>\n
