{"id":78964,"date":"2019-02-17T12:27:18","date_gmt":"2019-02-17T17:27:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gayfriendschat.com\/socialblog\/day-two-of-hrc-foundations-2019-time-to-thrive-conference\/"},"modified":"2019-02-17T12:27:18","modified_gmt":"2019-02-17T17:27:18","slug":"day-two-of-hrc-foundations-2019-time-to-thrive-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gayfriendschat.com\/socialblog\/day-two-of-hrc-foundations-2019-time-to-thrive-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"Day Two of HRC Foundation\u2019s 2019 Time to THRIVE Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Day Two of HRC Foundation\u2019s 2019 Time to THRIVE Conference<\/b><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets2.hrc.org\/images\/made\/images\/remote\/https_assets2.hrc.org\/files\/images\/blog\/t2t-main-1600x900_640_360.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>The second day of HRC Foundation\u2019s sixth annual <a href=\"http:\/\/timetothrive.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Time to THRIVE Conference<\/a> ended on Saturday after a day full of featured speakers, special guests, breakout panels, workshops and film screenings.<\/p>\n<p>During the morning plenary, attendees heard from Sebastian Ontiveros, National Director of Multicultural Alliance and Strategy Group &#038; Senior Manager, Consumer Engagement, Toyota; Dr. Beverly Hutton, Deputy Executive Director of Programs and Services, National Association of Secondary School Principals; Dr. Marguerite Williams, Senior Director, Equity and Diversity, Association of California School Administrators; Thomas Davis, Program Coordinator, the Black AIDS Institute, former HRC Youth Ambassador and former HRC HIV 360\u00b0 Fellow; Johanna Eager, Director, HRC Foundation\u2019s Welcoming Schools; Dr. Kathleen Ethier, Director, Division of Adolescent and School Health in the National Center for HIV\/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD and TB Prevention, Centers for Disease Control, and HRC Youth Ambassadors Savannah Skyler and Sameer Jha.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Transgender trailblazer Jazz Jennings, former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrc.org\/resources\/youth-ambassadors\" target=\"_blank\">HRC Youth Ambassador<\/a>, star of the GLAAD Award-winning TLC series, \u201cI Am Jazz,\u201d and her mom, a fierce advocate for transgender youth, also addressed the audience.<\/p>\n<p>The lunch plenary featured inspiring speakers, including Scott Sapperstein, Assistant Vice President Public Affairs, AT&T; Nathan Monell, Executive Director, National Parent Teacher Association, Jodie Patterson, author, activist, member of HRC\u2019s Parents for Transgender Equality Council and a member of HRC\u2019s Board of Directors and HRC Youth Ambassadors Lucas Segal and Gia Parr.<\/p>\n<div>\n<blockquote data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">\u201cThis world is unkind to people who are different and that\u2019s unfair .\u201d &#8211; Jodie Patterson (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jodie_GeorgiaNY?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Jodie_GeorgiaNY<\/a>), member of both the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HRC?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@HRC<\/a> Parents for Transgender Equality Council and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HRC?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@HRC<\/a> Foundation\u2019s Board of Directors.<br \/>\n\u26aa\ufe0f <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/n8SWF0y2CE\">pic.twitter.com\/n8SWF0y2CE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Human Rights Campaign (@HRC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HRC\/status\/1096891527706509313?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 16, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p>Additionally, HRC Senior Vice President, Diversity, Equity &#038; Inclusion Nicole Cozier facilitated a panel discussion with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrc.org\/resources\/youth-ambassadors\" target=\"_blank\">HRC Youth Ambassadors<\/a> Justin Jones, MaKayla Humphrey, Ashton Mota and Zimar Batista. The group, made up of youth who identify as LGBTQ and Black or African-American, discussed the HRC\u2019s Foundation\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrc.org\/resources\/black-and-african-american-lgbtq-youth-report\" target=\"_blank\">new report on Black and African-American LGBTQ teens<\/a> and discussed their own lives to shine light on how all youth-serving professionals can better serve LGBTQ youth of color.\u00a0<br \/>\nFollowing an afternoon of workshops, the night concluded with a screening of the movie \u201cRoom to Grow\u201d featuring director and producer Jon Garcia, producer Damian Pelliccione, and several cast members.<\/p>\n<div>\n<blockquote data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">At HRC Fnd\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/TimeToTHRIVE?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#TimeToTHRIVE<\/a> Conference, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HRC?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@HRC<\/a>\u2019s Nicole Cozier &#038; HRC youth ambassadors discussed the challenges of navigating the intersections of race, sexual orientation &#038; gender identity.<\/p>\n<p>To learn more about the experiences of Black <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/LGBTQ?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#LGBTQ<\/a> youth, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/wI7HySJO64\">t.co\/wI7HySJO64<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/5UOya1wRJ8\">pic.twitter.com\/5UOya1wRJ8<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Human Rights Campaign (@HRC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HRC\/status\/1096895592695881729?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 16, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p>Time to THRIVE is held in partnership with the American Counseling Association and the National Education Association, with AT&#038;T, BBVA Compass and Toyota as presenting sponsors. In its sixth year, HRC Foundation\u2019s premier national event addresses safety, inclusion and well-being for LGBTQ and questioning youth, and brings together youth-serving professionals to discuss best practices for working with and caring for LGBTQ youth and their families in schools, community centers, health care settings and beyond.
