Jussie Smollett Will Sit Down with Robin Roberts For His First Interview Since Alleged Attack: WATCH<\/b><\/p>\n

Actor Jussie Smollett will sit down for an interview with Robin Roberts on Good Morning America<\/em> tomorrow.<\/a><\/p>\n

It will be his first time talking to a journalist directly about being the victim of a possible hate crime in Chicago last week. Smollett was hospitalized and treated at Northwestern Memorial Hospital\u00a0in Chicago after the attack.<\/p>\n

TMZ originally reported the attack happened<\/a> when Smollett, was leaving a Subway and someone yelled, \u201cAren\u2019t you that f***ot Empire<\/em> n*****?\u201d\u00a0 The 2 men<\/a> \u2014 both white and wearing ski masks \u2014 viciously attacked Jussie as he fought back, but they beat him badly and fractured a rib. They put a rope around his neck, poured bleach on him and as they left they yelled, \u201cThis is MAGA country.\u201d<\/p>\n

Smollett spoke about\u00a0the attack on him<\/a>\u00a0for the first time at a performance at the Troubadour<\/a> in Los Angeles on Saturday night.<\/p>\n

Frank Gatson, the man<\/a> who was with Smollett the night of the attack, spoke out last week in an interview with\u00a0Extra<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Said Gatson<\/a>: \u201cI was there with Jussie. I\u2019m the one who called 911, I am the one who took him to the hospital, and it was so scary, man<\/a>, that was a scary night \u2014 my stomach was numb. I\u2019m just glad I was the old man<\/a> at his apartment when he got there, I was responsible. I said, \u2018Let\u2019s call<\/a> the cops, let\u2019s go to the hospital.\u2019 Shout out to Chicago police, especially the sergeant that came and got things together and made us feel comfortable\u2026Jussie is a very strong guy<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Smollett turned over phone records to the Chicago Police on Monday in relation to the alleged. But, according to the police, the records are insufficient.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Chicago Tribune<\/em>\u00a0reports<\/a>: \u201cInvestigators had sought Smollett\u2019s phone records since shortly after he\u00a0reported the attack<\/a>\u00a0Jan. 29 in the 300 block of East North Water Street. But police described Smollett\u2019s phone records as a heavily redacted document file and his manager\u2019s records as a screenshot of phone calls<\/a> that provide limited information to investigators. Chief police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said police were \u201cappreciative\u201d of Smollett\u2019s cooperation in providing the records but said detectives will likely need additional data from Smollett to crack the case.\u201d<\/p>\n

The comments of the CPD were interpreted as them casting doubt on Smollett\u2019s claim.<\/p>\n

CNN\u2019s Don Lemon, a friend of Smollett\u2019s told Jada Pinkett Smith<\/a>\u00a0on her show\u00a0Red Table Talk<\/em><\/a>, that he checks in with the\u00a0Empire<\/em>\u00a0actor frequently: \u201cLemon said that he knew everyone would be\u00a0picking Smollett\u2019s story apart<\/a>\u00a0and that the details are not really his concern. Instead, he said, he was interested in Smollett\u2019s \u201cwell-being.\u201d He texts him daily to check in, because he believes he can relate very well to his situation, as a gay<\/a>, black man<\/a> in the spotlight. \u201cSometimes he responds, sometimes he doesn\u2019t,\u201d he said of Smollett, adding that he seems to appreciate the concern.\u201d<\/p>\n

Roberts who is also Black and gay<\/a> is ideally suited to navigate the waters of an interview that could be potentially disturbing and contain more revelations as the investigation continues.<\/p>\n
