WONDER WOMAN #63 \u00a0<\/strong>gets\u00a0the\u00a0manga\u00a0treatment\u00a0by\u00a0Japanese\u00a0superstar Kamome Shirahama.<\/em><\/p>\n

HEROES IN CRISIS<\/strong> is something new in comics and boldly tackles mass shootings and PTSD.<\/p>\n

<\/figure>\n

\u201cCan I tell you a secret Goldie?\u201d Harley Quinn says to Booster Gold, early on in the first of issue <\/a>of\u00a0Heroes In Crisis<\/em>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0 DC\u2019s new company-wide crossover series \u2014 \u201cYou promise not to tell?\u201d Harley continues seductively, \u201cI\u00a0hate<\/em>\u00a0pudding.\u201d\u00a0 Here, Quinn is referring to both the options on the dessert menu at the diner she and Gold find themselves in, and we assume her on again\/off again boyfriend The Joker, for whom \u201cpuddin\u2019<\/em>\u00a0\u201d is her trademark term of endearment.<\/p>\n

Turns out the duo\u00a0\u2014 as unlikely a pair as you can find \u2014 have been secretly operating \u201cthe Sanctuary,\u201d an ultra-secret hospital for superheroes who\u2019ve been traumatized by crime-fighting and cosmic combat. And that\u2019s just the tip of the house-sized mysteries\u00a0 suggested in the the first issue of\u00a0Heroes In Crisis<\/em>. A mass-shooting massacre is at the center of C.I.A.-operative-turned-comics-writer Tom King\u2019s story, where he poses the question: How does a superhero handle PTSD?\u00a0<\/p>\n

King has proved his writing mettle with his still ongoing,\u00a0award winning\u00a0<\/a>runs on both\u00a0Batman<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Mister Miracle<\/em>. He continues to be able to oscillate between\u00a0both the incredibly cosmic (Batman and the Justice League against a New God<\/em>) and masterfully grounded stories (like Bruce Wayne serving on a jury attempting to convict the Batman of assault against Mr. Freeze).<\/p>\n

In\u00a0issue five of Crisis,<\/em>\u00a0King deftly maneuvers between humor and heavy emotion\u00a0and brings us closer to an understanding of who the mastermind behind the moves is or are.<\/p>\n

The term \u201ccrisis<\/a>\u201d is a storied one in DC lore, stemming back to the 1960s when the Justice Society of America (JSA) from Earth-2 (containing DC\u2019s 1940s golden age characters) and the Justice League of America from Earth-1 (the JLA we know essentially know now) would team up against odds that only the two greatest superhero teams in the multiverse could combat.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the DC Universe (DCU), the term\u00a0Crisis<\/em>\u00a0has\u00a0become a brand that consistently brings the greatest crossovers year after year. <\/p>\n

With\u00a0Heroes<\/em>, King takes that concept and does something truly original and cinematic.\u00a0<\/p>\n
