GLAAD stands with Jussie Smollett after hate-motivated attack in Chicago<\/b><\/p>\n

Earlier today in Chicago, actor and singer Jussie Smollett (Empire<\/em>) was attacked by two people who shouted both “racial and homophobic slurs” and poured an unknown chemical substance on him.<\/p>\n

GLAAD stands with Jussie and against such hate violence.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Statement from GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis:<\/p>\n

\u201cOur hearts are with Jussie Smollett as he recovers from a hate-motivated and repugnant attack in Chicago. Jussie has always used his voice and talent to create a better world, and it is disgusting that anyone, especially someone who has done such good for so many, would be targeted by undeniable hatred.<\/p>\n

GLAAD condemns these despicable acts as well as the racism and homophobia that drove them. Law enforcement needs to urgently conduct a thorough investigation and continue to be transparent with Chicago\u2019s Black and LGBTQ communities who may be experiencing heightened fears of violence.<\/p>\n

Jussie\u2019s experience is sadly not unique in today\u2019s America. Countless LGBTQ and people of color, as well as those who belong to both communities, are faced with hate-motivated violence on a near daily basis. We stand with Black and racial justice leaders to combat hate violence in all of its forms.\u201d<\/p>\n

Community members and allies are voicing support for Jussie using #WeLoveJussie and #JusticeForJussie<\/p>\n

The most recent study from the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs (NCAVP) reported<\/a> the deadliest on record for the LGBT community. More information:<\/p>\n

According to the Anti-Violence Project<\/a>, the severity of hate violence against LGBTQ people is increasing. 46% of LGBTQ survivors of hate violence sustained an injury in 2017 compared to 31% in 2016, 42% reported seeking medical attention in 2017 compared to 23% in 2016, and 27% reported that weapons were used in 2017 compared to 13% in 2016.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Smollett, who stars on FOX’s Empire<\/em>, came out as gay<\/a> in 2016 and continues to be a powerful advocate for LGBTQ acceptance and racial justice. In October, Smollett teamed up with the Trevor Project for its \u201cHow to Save a Life\u201d campaign, aimed at encouraging individuals to become volunteer crisis counselors for queer youth. Smollett also performed at the GLAAD San Francisco Gala in 2015 and introduced Cynthia Erivo at the 28th Annual GLAAD Media Awards\u00a0for a tribute to the victims of the Pulse nightclub attack.<\/p>\n
