Trump Ally Roger Stone Arrested by FBI in Dawn Raid, Indicted in Mueller Probe<\/b><\/p>\n

Trump ally and conspiracy theorist Roger Stone was arrested by the FBI at a dawn raid at his home in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and is expected to appear at federal court this morning.<\/p>\n

The NYT reports<\/a>: \u201cRoger J. Stone Jr., a longtime informal adviser to President Trump, was charged as part of the special counsel investigation over his communications with WikiLeaks, the organization behind the release of thousands of stolen Democratic emails during the 2016 campaign, in an indictment unsealed Friday.Mr. Stone was charged with seven counts<\/a>, including obstruction of an official proceeding, making false statements and witness tampering, according to the special counsel\u2019s office.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Washington Post<\/em> reports<\/a>: \u2018During the White House race, Stone publicly cheered on the group WikiLeaks as it released hacked emails that embarrassed Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. Stone also claimed before the election that he was in contact with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange whom he called \u201cmy hero.\u201d In July, a grand jury\u00a0indicted<\/a>\u00a012 Russian military officers on charges that they orchestrated the hacks and distributed pilfered documents to WikiLeaks and other sites. After the election, Stone acknowledged exchanging what he characterized as benign messages with Guccifer 2.0, a Twitter persona that U.S. intelligence officials say\u00a0was a front operated by the Russian military officers.\u00a0<\/a>But Stone has repeatedly denied any contact with Russia or WikiLeaks. He has said he had no advance knowledge of what material WikiLeaks held, adding that predictions he made about the group\u2019s plans were based on Assange\u2019s public comments and tips from associates.\u2019<\/p>\n

CNN reports<\/a>: \u2018The\u00a0indictment\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0wording does not say who on the campaign knew about Stone\u2019s quest, but makes clear it was multiple people. This is the first time prosecutors have alleged they know of additional people close to the President who worked with Stone as he sought out\u00a0WikiLeaks\u00a0<\/a>founder Julian Assange. \u201cAfter the July 22, 2016, release of stolen (Democratic National Committee) emails by Organization 1, a senior Trump Campaign official was directed to contact STONE about any additional releases and what other damaging information Organization 1 had regarding the Clinton Campaign. STONE thereafter told the Trump Campaign about potential future releases of damaging material by Organization 1,\u201d prosecutors wrote.\u2019<\/p>\n
