Gays and Lesbians Twice As Likely To Have Substance Abuse Problems: STUDY<\/b><\/p>\n

Past studies<\/a> have suggested that LGBT folks (especially our youth<\/a>) are more likely to use alcohol, tobacco or other drugs, in relation to their \u201cstraight\u201d peers, but not the extent to which it differed.<\/p>\n

An abstract of the study conducted by the University of Michigan called<\/a> the \u201cSeverity of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Drug Use Disorders Among Sexual Minority Individuals and Their \u2018Not Sure\u2019 Counterparts\u201d confirms that substance use disorders are more prevalent\u2014and more severe\u2014among sexual minorities in the United States, said lead researcher Carol Boyd, U-M professor of nursing.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur findings provide strong evidence that a higher proportion of sexual minority individuals, particularly bisexual<\/a> individuals and those who are not sure of their sexual identities, have severe alcohol and tobacco use disorders, and those who are \u2018not sure\u2019 also have a higher proportion of severe drug use disorders,\u201d said Boyd, who\u2019s also the director of the Center for Drugs, Alcohol, Smoking and Health.<\/p>\n

The study, in\u00a0the\u00a0latest\u00a0issue\u00a0of\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0Journal\u00a0of\u00a0LGBT\u00a0Health<\/a><\/em>, is troubling at best especially as the people who identified as lesbian<\/a> or gay<\/a> were over twice as likely to have a severe alcohol or tobacco use disorder, when compared to heterosexuals.<\/p>\n

The study didn\u2019t examine the reasons behind the alcohol and drug use, and more research is necessary to understand what it means to be \u201cnot sure,\u201d Boyd said.<\/p>\n

A depressing piece of data and a surprising finding was \u201cthat people who reported having no sex<\/a> during the past year were significantly less likely to have any substance use disorder,\u201d Boyd said. <\/p>\n

Again, due to the narrowness and specificity of the data, the researchers didn\u2019t examine why.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
