Pence\u2019s Wife To Teach Art At School That Bans LGBT Students and Their Parents<\/b><\/p>\n

Second Lady Karen Pence has taken an art teaching position at a Christian school in northern Virginia that bans gay<\/a> students and parents.<\/p>\n

Pence will teach elementary art two days a week at Immanuel Christian School in northern Virginia, her office announced. She\u2019ll be known as \u201cMrs. Pence\u201d to her students, not as the second lady<\/a> of the United States, per her office according to the<\/a> The Philadelphia Tribune.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI am excited to be back in the classroom and doing what I love to do, which is to teach art to elementary students,\u201d Pence said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have missed teaching art, and it\u2019s great to return to the school where I taught art for 12 years,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

The second lady<\/a> previously taught at Immaculate while her husband served in Congress. The Tribune<\/em> said Pence has spent 25 years as an elementary school teacher overall.<\/p>\n

Immaculate has\u00a0a \u201cparent agreement\u201d posted online<\/a>\u00a0stating their policy that bans LGBTQ students and parents from the school.<\/p>\n

\u201cI understand that the school reserves the right, within its sole discretion, to refuse admission to an applicant or to discontinue enrollment of a student if the atmosphere or conduct within a particular home, the activities of a parent or guardian, or the activities of the student are counter to, or are in opposition to, the biblical lifestyle the school teaches,\u201d it states.<\/p>\n

\u2018This includes, but is not limited to contumacious behavior, divisive conduct, and participating in, supporting, or condoning sexual immorality, homosexual activity or bi<\/a>-sexual activity, promoting such practices, or being unable to support the moral principles of the school. (Lev. 20:13 and Romans 1:27.) I acknowledge the importance of a family culture based on biblical principles and embrace biblical family values such as a healthy marriage between one man<\/a> and one woman<\/a>. My role as spiritual mentor to my children will be taken seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n

Karen Pence\u2019s office on Tuesday defended the decision. \u201cIt\u2019s absurd that her decision to teach art to children at a Christian school, and the school\u2019s religious beliefs, are under attack,\u201d Pence\u2019s spokeswoman Kara Brooks\u00a0told the Huffington Post<\/a>, which first reported the school\u2019s controversial views. It is unclear how long the school has had this policy in place.<\/p>\n

The New York Post<\/em> states<\/a> further: \u201cApplicants must also affirm that \u201cGod intends sexual intimacy to occur only between a man<\/a> and a woman<\/a> who are married to each other,\u201d\u00a0a 2018 application shows<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cMoral misconduct which violates the bona fide occupational qualifications for employees includes, but is not limited to, such behaviors as the following: heterosexual activity outside of marriage (e.g., premarital sex<\/a>, cohabitation, extramarital sex<\/a>), homosexual or lesbian<\/a> sexual activity, polygamy, transgender identity, any other violation of the unique roles of male<\/a> and female<\/a>, sexual harassment, use or viewing of pornographic material or websites, and sexual abuse or improprieties toward minors as defined by Scripture and federal or state law,\u201d the application states.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Fast Company<\/em> says<\/a> that \u201cIn Virginia as well as Ohio, Missouri, Arizona, and Alaska \u2014 it\u2019s legal for employers to discriminate based on gender identity.\u201d<\/p>\n
