Evangelicals Think LGBT People Shouldn\u2019t Be Protected From Lynching<\/b>

Evangelical activists are pressing Republican lawmakers to strip protections for LGBT+ people from an anti-lynching bill. The Justice for Victims of Lynching Act cleared the US Senate\u00a0on December 20 in a rare unanimous vote.<\/p>\n

The bill was introduced earlier this year by the chamber\u2019s three African-American senators: California Democratic Sen. Kamala Harris, New Jersey Democratic Sen. Cory Booker and South Carolina Republican Sen. Tim Scott. The proposal outlines the specific act of Lynching \u2014 a mob killing without legal authority \u2014 and would add lynching to the federal list of hate crimes. Harris touted the vote on Twitter, calling the moment \u201chistory.\u201d<\/p>\n

The bill describes lynching as \u201cthe ultimate expression of racism in the United States\u201d following Reconstruction and counts 4,742 overwhelmingly African-American victims reported from 1882 to 1968. It notes further that some 200 anti-lynching bills had been brought before Congress and 99 percent \u201cof all perpetrators of lynching escaped from punishment by state or local officials.\u201d<\/div>\n

\u201cToday, we have righted that wrong and taken corrective action that recognizes this stain on our country\u2019s history,\u201d Booker said in a statement following the vote.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

But Liberty Counsel president Mat Staver told\u00a0fundamentalist Christian news outlet\u00a0OneNewsNow<\/a>\u00a0that he is lobbying lawmakers in the House of Representatives to have the LGBT language removed from the law.<\/p>\n

Staver claimed: \u201cThe old saying is once that camel gets the nose in the tent, you can\u2019t stop them from coming the rest of the way in.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd this would be the first time that you would have in federal law mentioning gender identity and sexual orientation, as part of this anti-lynching bill.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
