Politico reports<\/a>: \u2018Trump initially seemed to rule out choosing Grenell for the job, telling reporters he\u2019d prefer to keep him in Germany. \u201cRic is doing so well that I wouldn\u2019t want to move him,\u201d the president told reporters last week shortly after Haley announced her plans to\u00a0step down\u00a0by the end of the year.\u00a0But in recent days, several of Trump\u2019s closest advisers have put forward Grenell\u2019s name again, pointing to his seven-year stint as the United States\u2019 U.N. spokesman.\u2019<\/p>\n Grenell has plenty of other controversy in his past, as the\u00a0Washington Blade\u00a0<\/em>noted<\/a>: \u201cGrenell waited nearly eight months for confirmation in the Senate.\u00a0Grenell faced opposition over mean tweets about the appearance of women<\/a>, including Hillary Clinton, Rachel Maddow and Callista Gingrich, and tweets downplaying the impact of Russia meddling in the 2016 election.\u201d<\/p>\n In 2017\u00a0it was thought that Trump would pick Grenell as ambassador to NATO<\/a>.<\/p>\n The White House on Grenell\u2019s background:<\/p>\n \u201cMr.\u00a0Grenell<\/span>,\u00a0a foreign policy writer and commentator, founded the international consulting firm Capitol Media Partners in 2010.\u00a0 For nearly two decades, he has served as the primary communications adviser for public officials at the local, state, Federal, and international levels, as well as for a Fortune 200 ranked company.\u00a0 Mr.\u00a0Grenell<\/span>\u00a0is the longest serving United States spokesman at the United Nations (2001-2008) having served four United States Ambassadors.\u00a0 He earned a B.A. from Evangel University and an MPA from Harvard University\u2019s John F. Kennedy School of Government.\u201d<\/p>\n Grenell\u00a0served as an advisor to Mitt Romney<\/a>\u00a0during his 2012 campaign for president but was forced to resign two weeks into the job after a campaign by social conservatives over his sexual orientation forced him out.<\/p>\n The American Family Association\u2019s Bryan Fischer\u00a0was among those<\/a>\u00a0leading the charge.<\/p>\n Argued Fischer in a CNN appearance<\/a>: \u201cWell, the point here is that personnel is policy. Everybody in D.C. says that. Personnel is policy.
