In honor of Bisexual Visibility Day, which we celebrate annually on Sept. 23, here are a few of our favorite standout moments for bisexual<\/a>, queer, pansexual and fluid visibility in 2018.<\/p>\n

1. West Hollywood hosts a bisexual<\/a> pride parade:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The celebration, thought to be the country\u2019s first ever city-sponsored bisexual themed pride<\/a>, will be hosted by the City of West Hollywood, HRC\u2019s Los Angeles Steering Committee and amBi. \u201cSince being involved with HRC, I wanted to make it possible for bisexuals<\/a>, especially bisexual<\/a> people of color to feel equality and to feel part of the community and celebrated,\u201d said HRC Los Angeles volunteer Ashlei Shyne in an interview with the Los Angeles Blade<\/a>.<\/p>\n

2. Sara Ramirez\u2019s character comes out as bisexual<\/a> on \u201cMadam Secretary\u201d:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Actor Sara Ramirez brings visibility to both the screen and the frontlines of the movement for equality. In March, Ramirez\u2019s character Kat Sandoval came out in a powerful \u201cMadam Secretary\u201d storyline about supporting LGBTQ refugees and asylum seekers facing violence.<\/p>\n

3. #BisexualMenSpeak makes its way across Twitter:<\/strong><\/p>\n

A recent Australian survey<\/a> found that bisexual<\/a> men<\/a> are the least likely LGBTQ people to come out, followed closely by bi<\/a> women<\/a>. The hashtag #BisexualMenSpeak became a safe haven this summer for bi<\/a>, queer, pan and fluid men<\/a> to talk about their experiences and struggles with being seen as their true, authentic selves.<\/p>\n

#BisexualMenSpeak<\/a> is one of the most compelling, educational and healing hashtags we\u2019ve ever seen. Thank you for opening our eyes, we hear you, we see you, and your heartfelt stories absolutely matter. 4. HRC\u2019s 22nd annual National Dinner:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Rachael Gresson and Sherie Hughes are the first duo of HRC National Dinner co-chairs to identify as bisexual<\/a>. In their opening remarks, they touched on both the challenges our community faces and the importance of bisexual<\/a> visibility: \u201cWe have to continue to speak up and turn out for those who can\u2019t,\u201d Gresson said. \u201cFor those who might fear for their safety, or don\u2019t benefit from the privilege many of us have by being able to be visible and outspoken.\u201d<\/p>\n

5. Janelle Mon\u00e1e came out, and the internet exploded with searches:<\/strong><\/p>\n

When Janelle Mon\u00e1e came out as \u201ca queer Black woman<\/a> in America,\u201d it was a moment of visibility that resonated with many — evidenced by the number of definition<\/a> searches for pan identities. HRC\u2019s Allison Turner celebrated the moment in a piece<\/a> for USA Today<\/em>: \u201cMy hope is that… we can take a cue from Mon\u00e1e and say to pansexual, queer and bisexual<\/a> people — and especially young people — \u2018We see you.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

6. A bisexual<\/a> scientist starts #BiInSci to celebrate representation in STEM fields:<\/strong><\/p>\n

In April, bisexual<\/a> virologist Isabel Ott started the #BiInSci hashtag<\/a> to increase the visibility of bisexual<\/a> people working in STEM fields, which have historically struggled to include people with marginalized identities. Hundreds began sharing photos of themselves<\/a> in the workplace and messages of support.<\/p>\n

\n

We love seeing the incredible voices behind #BiInSci<\/a> this week. Visibility is so important — especially in fields like #STEM<\/a> where too many of our communities are underrepresented. \ufffd\ufffd\ufffd\ufffd\ufffd\ufffd\ufffd\ufffd\u2697\ufe0ft.co\/pbaSbl2LId<\/a><\/p>\n

7. HRC staffers push back against harmful, biphobic rhetoric in the news:<\/strong><\/p>\n

HRC\u2019s Allison Turner and Madeleine Roberts spoke out in USA Today<\/em> about the importance of bi<\/a> visibility and the real health disparities that bisexual<\/a> people face. They co-authored a letter to the editor<\/a> pushing back against a harmful and biphobic column: \u201cWith views like [James] Bovard\u2019s still so casually expressed\u2026 it\u2019s no wonder that bisexual<\/a> people are less likely to live<\/a> openly. And that makes it more difficult to address the very real and sometimes life-threatening barriers faced by bisexuals<\/a>. We are not a punchline, Mr. Bovard.\u201d<\/p>\n
