Thank you for all the love <\/p>\n \u2014 Matthew Kaminski (@bravesorganist) August 31, 2018<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Murphy, who made the homophobic remarks in 2015 about out former MLB player Billy Bean,\u00a0was asked to clarify his remarks before his debut with the Cubs, and it was clear that little had changed about his views<\/a>.<\/p>\n Said Murphy: \u201cWhat I would say to that is that I\u2019ve been able to foster a really positive relationship with Billy Bean since that time.\u00a0I\u2019m really excited to continue to cultivate that relationship that we\u2019ve built.\u00a0Billy, his job I think is Ambassador for Inclusion with Major League Baseball is a vital role so that everyone feels included, not only in our industry in baseball, but in all aspects of life.\u00a0Again, I hope that anyone that comes to Wrigley Field feels welcome.\u00a0That\u2019s my hope. That\u2019s the hope of Major League Baseball. And speaking with Billy Bean \u2014 again, like I said, the relationship that we\u2019ve been able to forge \u2014\u00a0that\u2019s what he\u2019s trying to do.\u00a0I think that\u2019s what we\u2019re trying to do as an industry. We want people to feel welcome, whatever walk of life that might be.\u201d<\/p>\n When asked if he had a message to any fans conflicted with his presence on the team, Murphy responded: \u201cOh dear. I would hope that you would root for the Cubs.\u201d<\/p>\n Here\u2019s\u00a0what Murphy had to say\u00a0<\/a>to\u00a0NJ Advance Media<\/a>\u00a0in 2015:<\/p>\n \u201cI disagree with his lifestyle. I do disagree with the fact that Billy is a homosexual. That doesn\u2019t mean I can\u2019t still invest in him and get to know him. I don\u2019t think the fact that someone is a homosexual should completely shut the door on investing in them in a relational aspect. Getting to know him. That, I would say, you can still accept them but I do disagree with the lifestyle, 100 percent\u2026<\/p>\n \u201cMaybe, as a Christian, that we haven\u2019t been as articulate enough in describing what our actual stance is on homosexuality. We love the people. We disagree the lifestyle. That\u2019s the way I would describe it for me. It\u2019s the same way that there are aspects of my life that I\u2019m trying to surrender to Christ in my own life. There\u2019s a great deal of many things, like my pride. I just think that as a believer trying to articulate it in a way that says just because I disagree with the lifestyle doesn\u2019t mean I\u2019m just never going to speak to Billy Bean every time he walks through the door. That\u2019s not love. That\u2019s not love at all.\u201d<\/p>\n Bean heard Murphy\u2019s comments after he received several emails asking how he felt about the player\u2019s \u201cgay<\/a> lifestyle\u201d comments. Bean responded to Murphy\u2019s comments with class in an article\u00a0he wrote for\u00a0MLB.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n Said Bean:<\/p>\n \u201cAfter reading his comments, I appreciate that Daniel spoke his truth. I really do. I was visiting his team, and a reporter asked his opinion about me. He was brave to share his feelings, and it made me want to work harder and be a better example that someday might allow him to view things from my perspective, if only for just a moment.<\/p>\n \u201cI respect him, and I want everyone to know that he was respectful of me. We have baseball in common, and for now, that might be the only thing. But it\u2019s a start.<\/p>\n \u201cThe silver lining in his comments are that he would be open to investing in a relationship with a teammate, even if he \u201cdisagrees\u201d with the lifestyle. It may not be perfect, but I do see him making an effort to reconcile his religious beliefs with\u00a0his<\/em>\u00a0interpretation of the word lifestyle. It took me 32 years to fully accept my sexual orientation, so it would be hypocritical of me to not be patient with others.\u201d<\/p>\n Bill Gubrud, who created Out at Wrigley in 2001,\u00a0told Block Club Chicago<\/a>:\u00a0I just don\u2019t like the man<\/a> at all.\u00a0Honestly, when someone says they don\u2019t like the gay<\/a> lifestyle, what they\u2019re saying is, \u2018I think it\u2019s gross when two guys<\/a> are having sex<\/a> together.\u2019 And that\u2019s exactly what Daniel Murphy meant.\u00a0There weren\u2019t many openly gay<\/a> sports fans [during the first Gay Day in 2001] because of the fear of retribution, of going to a ballpark and all that \u2026 . Stupid comments like that from Daniel Murphy, there\u2019s no place in society for anything like that.\u201d<\/p>\n Wrote Cyd Zeigler at Outsports<\/a>: \u2018I have never advocated for chasing every single Christian person out of sports who \u201cdisagrees\u201d with the fact that I\u2019m married to my husband. But when someone decides to publicly elevate the anti-gay<\/a> environment of the sports world, it\u2019s up to him to fix that.
