Playwright and Screenwriter Neil Simon Dead at 91<\/b><\/p>\n

Playwright and screenwriter Neil Simon has died at the age of 91 of complications related to pneumonia, according to his publicist.<\/p>\n

Variety reports<\/a>: \u2018A statement from his reps said, \u201cNeil Simon<\/a>, the Pulitzer Prize-winning American playwright, died last night at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. The cause was complications from pneumonia\u2026.His wife, Elaine Joyce Simon, was at his bedside along with Mr. Simon\u2019s daughters, Ellen Simon and Nancy Simon.\u201d Beginning in the 1960s, Simon could guarantee good Broadway advance sales, a rare feat for a writer. He had more than 30 plays mounted on Broadway, including four that ran simultaneously in 1966: \u201cSweet Charity,\u201d \u201cThe Star-Spangled Girl,\u201d \u201cThe Odd Couple\u201d and \u201cBarefoot in the Park.\u201d\u2019<\/p>\n

Playbill adds<\/a>: \u2018Simon also made his mark as a creator of original screenplays, writing the scripts for the 1972 critical hit\u00a0The Heartbreak Kid<\/i>, which was directed by Elaine May;\u00a0The Out-of-Towners<\/i>, starring Jack Lemmon and Sandy Dennis as hapless visitors comically victimized by New York City;\u00a0Murder By Death<\/i>, a spoof of the detective genre; and the 1977 romantic comedy\u00a0The Goodbye Girl<\/i>, which starred his then-wife Marsha Mason and helped to make Richard Dreyfuss a star. He was nominated for an Oscar for the latter, as well as for the films of\u00a0California Suite, The Sunshine Boys<\/i>, and\u00a0The Odd Couple<\/i>. He won a Golden Globe for\u00a0The Goodbye Girl<\/i>, and was nominated for\u00a0The Sunshine Boys\u00a0<\/i>and\u00a0The Heartbreak Kid<\/i>.\u2019<\/p>\n
