Coming out in a traditional Asian family presents its own set of challenges which were examined in a new segment from the ABC News show What Would You Do?<\/em><\/p>\n When \u201cDaniel\u201d came out to his parents in a New Jersey diner (which seems to be the favorite setting of this show), they reacted with horror.<\/p>\n Said the mother: \u201cYou won\u2019t have a normal life if you\u2019re gay<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cCome on,\u201d interjected an eavesdropping customer. \u201cYou\u2019re embarrassing yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n When Daniel\u2019s parents got up to leave, the customer and her male<\/a> companion joined them, telling him, \u201cIt\u2019s not something you can help. It\u2019s not a choice\u2026Just from knowing Asian families they don\u2019t accept that. It\u2019s\u2026not many families do. Don\u2019t let that control your life, and kind of just, you know, find yourself, and do what makes you happy.\u201d<\/p>\n Other customers were not so understanding. One customer who overheard Daniel\u2019s coming out told the mother he considered it a \u201cproblem\u201d and a \u201csin in the eyes of God\u201d and advised her to seek the counseling of a pastor who would know what to do.<\/p>\n The actor playing Daniel, who identifies as queer in real life, said he\u2019d expect a similar reaction if he ever tried to come out to his family in China.<\/p>\n Many other customers defended Daniel over his bigoted parents.<\/p>\n In the show\u2019s final and most touching moment, a woman<\/a> joined Daniel at his table in tears after his parents walked away, telling him, \u201cI just want you to know it\u2019s okay. There\u2019s nothing wrong with being gay<\/a>. Be yourself and if they can\u2019t accept it that\u2019s their problem.\u201d<\/p>\n When confronted by them about getting involved, she stood up for him: \u201cHe\u2019s very brave in coming out to you. I saw how sad he was and it made me sad\u2026He\u2019s your son. You love him, right?
