Wearing socks from the \u201cEnemy of the People\u201d collection, CNN reporter and frequent Trump target Jim Acosta joined Stephen Colbert to talk about the state of \u201cfake news\u201d CNN and covering Trump today.<\/p>\n
Colbert first brought up Acosta\u2019s recent confrontation with Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who refused to say that journalists are not the \u201cenemy of the people.\u201d<\/p>\n
Said Acosta: \u201cIt\u2019s not a big deal, right? Just say, you know, we\u2019re not the enemy of the people.\u00a0At the end of the day, you shouldn\u2019t be referring to journalists as the \u2018enemy of the people.\u2019 We\u2019re not the enemy of the people.\u201d<\/p>\n
Acosta said that when Trump refers to CNN as \u201cfake news\u201d he takes it as \u201che\u2019s calling on me for a question.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have had to be fact checkers in real time,\u201d added Acosta. \u201cThese are some tough times\u2026I don\u2019t think we do ourselves any good, Stephen, if we shy away from these hard questions.\u00a0And, you know, my goodness, the way I look at it is\u2013 and this is the debate I have with my fellow journalists when we talk about this is what if we just did nothing? Do we just sit back and do nothing in the face of that?\u201d<\/p>\n
Colbert then played a clip of Acosta getting attacked by a mob at Trump\u2019s Tampa rally.<\/p>\n
Replied Acosta:\u00a0\u201cThey\u2019ll ask me, \u2018Why don\u2019t you report the good things he does?\u2019 I said, \u2018Listen, we just talked about the jobs numbers last Friday. He had good jobs numbers last Friday.\u2019 And they say, \u2018Oh, okay. Well, do you like the president?\u2019 And I said, \u2018That\u2019s not relevant. I don\u2019t have to like the president of the United States. He doesn\u2019t have to like me. We all have jobs to do.\u2019\u00a0My sense of it, Stephen, is that a lot of these folks- they get their impression of what we do by watching other conservative outlets, they look at other conservative websites. And these folks are focused on the coverage of the president\u2019s behavior more so than the president\u2019s behavior. And to me, I think the president\u2019s behavior is more newsworthy than our coverage. But a lot of these folks out there, they\u2019re getting their sense of what we do twisted and warped by some people out there who just want to do the president\u2019s bidding.\u201d<\/p>\n
Asked Colbert: \u201cDo you worry that the president points at y\u2019all so much and there\u2019s a natural need to respond as a human being that you end up being the story when that\u2019s not really the goal of your journalism?\u201d<\/p>\n
Replied Acosta: \u201cWe\u2019re not supposed to be the story, you know.
