LGBTQ Athletes Make History in ESPN The Magazine\u2019s 2018 Body Issue<\/b>
\n<\/p>\n

The 10th anniversary edition of ESPN The Magazine<\/em>\u2019s Body Issue<\/a> made history this week by featuring three out LGBTQ athletes \u2014 the most in the history of the striking annual photo portfolio. WNBA All-Star Sue Bird, women<\/a>\u2019s soccer standout Megan Rapinoe and skating Olympian Adam Rippon all grace the pages of the 2018 issue.<\/p>\n

Bird and Rapinoe, who are pictured together and have been dating since since 2016, became the first LGBTQ couple<\/a> in the magazine\u2019s history to pose together.<\/p>\n

\u201cHaving a gay<\/a> couple<\/a> on there hopefully just becomes the norm,\u201d Bird said in a video interview with Rapinoe<\/a> for espnW. \u201cFor us to be on it is the first step in that direction.\u201d<\/p>\n

Past issues have featured LGBTQ athletes including Rapinoe<\/a> (2014), duathlete Chris Mosier, the first transgender athlete to be featured<\/a>,<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Olympic diver Greg Louganis<\/a> (2016) and Olympic freeskier Gus Kenworthy<\/a> (2017). LGBTQ representation in athletics is incredibly important, with visibility paving the way for other athletes to feel more comfortable living their truths.<\/p>\n

In an interview with espnW<\/a> last summer, Bird came out as lesbian<\/a> and confirmed she was in a relationship with Rapinoe. The Seattle Storm star reflected on her journey, saying she decided 2017 was the right time for her to come out publicly. She also encouraged others to come out at a time that felt most authentic to them.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s happening when it\u2019s happening because that\u2019s what feels right,\u201d Bird said in the interview. \u201cI have to be true to that. It\u2019s my journey.\u201d<\/p>\n

HRC highlighted Bird in our 2017 National Coming Out Day<\/a> campaign.<\/p>\n

This is the second time Rapinoe has posed for the Body Issue \u2014 she became the first openly LGBTQ athlete featured<\/a> in the magazine in 2014.<\/p>\n

Rapinoe is a professional soccer player who competes for the Seattle Reign FC in the National Women\u2019s Soccer League. As a member of the 2015 U.S. Women\u2019s National Soccer team, she helped Team USA to a FIFA Women\u2019s World Cup gold medal.<\/p>\n

Rapinoe came out as lesbian<\/a> in 2012 in an interview with Out<\/em><\/a> magazine and since then has been a trailblazer working tirelessly for the rights of LGBTQ athletes.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel everyone is really craving [for] people to come out,\u201d Rapinoe said in the interview. \u201cPeople want \u2014 they need <\/em>\u2014 to see that there are people like me playing soccer for the good ol\u2019 U.S. of A.\u201d<\/p>\n

A longtime HRC supporter, Rapinoe joined HRC\u2019s #LoveConquersHate campaign<\/a> in 2013 in support of Russia\u2019s LGBTQ community ahead of the Sochi Olympic Games.<\/p>\n

Rippon made history as the first openly gay<\/a> U.S. American male<\/a> figure skater to compete in the Winter Olympics. Before heading to Pyeongchang, he sat down in an exclusive interview<\/a> with HRC\u2019s Mark Lee to discuss this powerful moment and what it means for LGBTQ history.<\/p>\n

\u201cI couldn\u2019t have done this [shoot] while I was in the closet,\u201d Rippon told ESPN<\/a>. \u201cI think that with my experience of coming out, I felt so liberated in so many ways.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, we presented Rippon with the HRC Visibility Award<\/a> at the HRC Los Angeles Gala, where he gave an impassioned speech about being a role model to LGBTQ youth and empowering and encouraging those around us to be confident in their authentic selves.<\/p>\n
