Lando Calrissian is sexually fluid, according to screenwriter Jonathan Kasdan, who co-wrote Solo: A Star Wars Story<\/em> with his father, Lawrence Kasdan.<\/p>\n Said Kasdan to the Huffington Post<\/a>:\u00a0\u201cI would say yes.\u00a0There\u2019s a fluidity to Donald and Billy Dee\u2019s (Lando in the\u00a0Star Wars\u00a0<\/em>trilogy) sexuality. I mean, I would have loved to have gotten a more explicitly LGBT character into this movie. I think it\u2019s time, certainly, for that, and I love the fluidity\u2014sort of the spectrum of sexuality that Donald appeals to and that droids are a part of. He doesn\u2019t make any hard and fast rules. I think it\u2019s fun. I don\u2019t know where it will go.\u201d<\/p>\n The Daily Beast\u2019s Ira Madison isn\u2019t impressed<\/a>: \u201cThis queerbaiting is the best they can do? It is condescending, somehow even more so than the vague insistence that two male<\/a> characters in the new trilogy, Finn and Poe, might possibly have a relationship. The chemistry between the two, much like Han and Lando\u2019s, inspired fans to create fan fiction and fan art shipping a supposed relationship between them. It\u2019s part of why everyone continues asking\u00a0Star Wars<\/em>\u00a0writers and directors if anything is going to happen on the queer front. But it\u2019s also a lot of pandering on the studio\u2019s part.\u201d<\/p>\n Neither is\u00a0Megan Farokhmanesh from the Verge: <\/a>\u201cKasdan\u2019s assertion that Lando \u2018doesn\u2019t make any hard and fast rules \u2026 it\u2019s fun\u2019 falls into a long, damaging tradition of conflating pansexuality with promiscuity. Embracing sexual attraction to whomever catches your interest isn\u2019t about being a rule-breaker. Portraying it as such is lazy shorthand for \u2018wild and free\u2019 thinking.\u201d<\/p>\n Adds Madison: \u201cTeasing the possibility of characters being gay<\/a> in the media, however well-meaning, isn\u2019t useful. Particularly if it\u2019s not actually in the text. This is reminiscent of JK Rowling\u2019s claims that Dumbledore is gay<\/a> after the conclusion of her\u00a0Harry Potter\u00a0<\/em>franchise. An LGBTQ audience does not benefit from interviews wherein the creators retroactively attach specific sexualities to their characters. It\u2019s not representation, it\u2019s queerbaiting and playing both sides of the fence. No one will actually admit that they\u2019re worried what including a queer character might mean to fans or international sales. No one will admit that there aren\u2019t any queer people writing and directing\u00a0Star Wars\u00a0<\/em>films either, so maybe those creators are reticent to write something they don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n Bonnie Burton at CNET<\/a>, who is \u2018pansexual\u2019 herself, has a different view: \u201c\u2026as a fan, I love that we\u2019re at least getting more diverse characters in Star Wars films at all.
