New Hampshire lawmakers vote to explicitly protect transgender people from discrimination<\/b><\/p>\n

With today\u2019s victory in the Senate, House Bill 1319 has passed both chambers of the New Hampshire legislature with bipartisan support<\/em><\/p>\n

NEW YORK –\u00a0<\/strong>GLAAD, the world\u2019s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, released the following statement celebrating the New Hampshire Senate for passing<\/a> HB 1319. House Bill 1319, also known as #TransBillNH, would update that state\u2019s laws prohibiting discrimination in employment, housing, and public spaces to explicitly include transgender residents by adding protections on the basis of gender identity. It now heads to the governor with bipartisan support from both chambers of the state legislature.<\/p>\n

\u201cNew Hampshire\u2019s leaders are demonstrating that nondiscrimination protection is not \u2013 and should never be \u2013 a partisan issue. From Alaska to New Hampshire Republicans and Democrats are coming together to support all people,\u201d said Zeke Stokes, Vice President of Programs at GLAAD<\/strong>. \u201cGov. Sununu has said he is inclined to sign the measure, and it\u2019s critical that he do so in order to ensure that everyone in New Hampshire has access to the same freedoms and protections under law.\u201d<\/p>\n

Currently, New Hampshire is the\u00a0only state<\/a>\u00a0in New England that has not passed transgender-inclusive non-discrimination protections.\u00a0HB 1319 now heads to Republican Gov. Chris Sununu, who has previously indicated his\u00a0support<\/a>\u00a0of the bill.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This legislative victory for transgender rights follows a victory at the ballot box last month where when voters in Anchorage, Alaska rejected\u00a0Proposition 1<\/a>, a sweeping anti-transgender ballot measure which aimed to overturn the trans<\/a>-inclusive portions of the city\u2019s\u00a02015 nondiscrimination ordinance<\/a>\u00a0and require trans<\/a> people to use public restrooms that correspond to their original birth certificate.<\/p>\n
