Charlotte’s First Time Out<\/b><\/p>\n

\"Charlotte's<\/a><\/p>\n

Charlotte,
\n(who is better known as Chuck)
\nplanned for weeks
\nfor the weekend away from home,
\nbuying pantyhose, make-up, heels
\nand underthings,<\/p>\n

a pretty dress
\nfancy rings
\nand hair that fell
\nlike the golden fringe
\non a cheerleader’s miniskirt,
\nand hiding it all
\nin a box in the garage
\nbehind old paint cans
\nin a corner
\nwhere his wife never goes,
\ngood camouflage
\nslipping out there the night before
\nto pack it in the trunk of the car
\nfor this was to be
\nhis first
\ntime out.<\/p>\n

He told her he was going
\nto a “regional meeting,”
\na training session,
\na seminar,
\na very boring kind of thing,
\nfrom which he would return
\non Sunday.<\/p>\n

The drive was long
\nfour hours,
\n(plus one ten-minute pit stop
\nto relieve himself and buy 12 cans of Bud…for you)
\nbut necessary to be far enough away
\nso no one there would know him;
\nno chance of being recognized
\n(“Isn’t that Chuck over there?
\nin the sequined mini-dress?
\nYeah
\nYou remember Chuck.
\nWasn’t he a running back, back in high school
\nfor the Querro Gobblers?”)<\/p>\n

Checked in as someone else
\nand trucked his stuff to the motel room
\nhis heart beating hard
\nlike the big bass drum
\nat half-time
\nand immediately got down to business.<\/p>\n

Shaving carefully first
\nand then the make-up
\n(according to instructions he found on the Internet.)
\nCarefully applying layer after layer
\nof this and that
\nand last of all
\nthe wig,
\npreening in the mirror
\na pom-pom girl<\/a> at last
\npreparing for her date
\nwith destiny.<\/p>\n

The clothing was a cinch.
\nHe’d done it all, many times before
\nstealing time
\nwhen his wife was not around.
\n(She might have understood, he thought,
\nbut then again
\nmight not.
\nSo why take the chance?)<\/p>\n

The bra,
\nthe slip,
\nand then the clothes;
\nthe dress
\nhigh heels,
\nand pantyhose
\nand there she was
\nso free at last
\nso free at last
\nfeeling so flighty
\nand free at last.<\/p>\n

Crossing to the door she saw
\nthe light of twilight
\nthrough the motel window.
\nNot time, just yet, she thought,
\nMuch safer in the evening light,
\nand turned the TV on.
\nESPN
\nincluded in the price. How nice.
\nAnd just in time to see
\nthe Bears kick off.
\nHow nice.<\/p>\n

And what a game it was.
\nDear Charlotte didn’t see the time slip by
\nShe chewed her lipstick off at third and one.
\nAnd scratched her nails to shreds
\nat fourth and goal.<\/p>\n

At half time she took off her wig
\nand pantyhose
\nand popped the top
\non one more bud for you.
\nWho knows
\nwhat might have been
\nif Charlotte had not fumbled on that night.<\/p>\n

You see,
\nthe game plan doesn’t always go as planned,
\nand armchair quarterbacks in heels
\nmay fill the stands
\nBut though they may not play
\nthe odds are high
\nthey’ll dress out on another day.
