Gay Civil Rights Attorney Dies After Setting Himself on Fire in Brooklyn Park<\/b>

David Buckel \/ YouTube<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

David Buckel a gay<\/a> civil rights attorney who was a lead attorney in the case involving murdered transgender Nebraskan Brandon Teena, died early Saturday morning after setting himself on fire in a Brooklyn park.<\/p>\n

The New York Times<\/em>, which along with several other media outlets was sent a note from Buckel explaining his suicide, said the note urged people \u201cto lead less selfish lives as a way to protect the planet.\u201d<\/p>\n

The NYT reports<\/a>:<\/p>\n

While serving as marriage project director and senior counsel at Lambda Legal, a national organization that fights for the civil rights of lesbian<\/a>, gay<\/a>, bisexual<\/a> and transgender people, Mr. Buckel was the strategist behind important same-sex<\/a> marriage cases in New Jersey and Iowa.<\/p>\n

Friends said that after he left the organization, Mr. Buckel became involved in environmental causes, which he alluded to in his note as the reason he decided to end his life by self-immolation with fossil fuels.<\/p>\n

\u201cPollution ravages our planet, oozing inhabitability via air, soil, water and weather,\u201d he wrote in the email sent to The Times. \u201cMost humans on the planet now breathe air made unhealthy by fossil fuels, and many die early deaths as a result \u2014 my early death by fossil fuel reflects what we are doing to ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n

Buckel was 60 years old.<\/p>\n

Camilla Taylor, Director of Constitutional Litigation and Acting Legal Director, issued the following statement:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe news of David\u2019s death is heartbreaking. This is a tremendous loss for our Lambda Legal family, but also for the entire movement for social justice. David was an indefatigable attorney and advocate, and also a dedicated and loving friend to so many. He will be remembered for his kindness, devotion, and vision for justice.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a tragic loss for our Lambda Legal family and for the social justice movement. Our hearts go out to all who knew him. David was a beautiful human being who was universally kind to everyone at Lambda Legal, committed to his clients, and devoted to our work.<\/p>\n

\u201cDavid was a brilliant legal visionary. David helped create Lambda Legal\u2019s focus on LGBT youth. His work on Nabozny v. Podlesny resulted in a landmark victory for a high school student forced to drop out of school as a result of brutality perpetrated by other students and inaction by his school administrators. It was the first time a federal court had ever held that schools have an obligation to prevent anti-gay<\/a> bullying, and put schools across the country on notice that they were responsible for putting a stop to it. His thoughtful and engaging advocacy broke through many stubborn misconceptions and showed it was possible and necessary for our movement to speak up for bullied, ostracized LGBT young people.<\/p>\n

As Lambda Legal\u2019s Marriage Project Director, he led our work nationwide seeking the freedom to marry. He brought Lewis v. Harris, resulting in a New Jersey Supreme Court victory that recognized the tangible and dignitary harms to same-sex<\/a> couples<\/a> and their children from being excluded from the rights and responsibilities of marriage. He championed filing a marriage lawsuit in state court in Iowa in 2005, at a time when only Massachusetts permitted same-sex<\/a> couples<\/a> to marry. When the Iowa Supreme Court delivered us a unanimous victory in 2009, Iowa was only the third state in the country where same-sex<\/a> couples<\/a> could marry. The decision vindicated David\u2019s firm belief that we could win such cases even in the heartland, and propelled us to victories elsewhere.<\/p>\n

\u201cDavid also led Lambda Legal\u2019s work to secure justice and accountability for the murder of Brandon Teena, a transgender man<\/a> who was brutally raped and then killed by his rapists after law enforcement failed to intervene.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur thoughts and condolences go out to all those who loved David. We have lost a movement leader, a colleague, and a friend. We will honor his life by continuing his fight for a better world.\u201d<\/p>\n
