Death Penalty Sought in Killing of Transgender Missouri Teen<\/b>

The death penalty is being sought for Andrew Vrba, a 19-year-old charged in the murder of transgender teen<\/a> Ally Steinfeld, 17.<\/p>\n

Vrba and 19-year-old Isis Schauer and 24-year-old Briana Calderas were arraigned in September on charges including first-degree murder, armed criminal action and abandonment of a corpse. James T. Grigsby was also charged with abandonment of a corpse and tampering with evidence in a felony case.<\/p>\n

The last people known to have been with Steinfeld were Vrba, Schauer and Calderas. The victim\u2019s family had spoken to the three suspects who they believed to be lying about Steinfeld\u2019s whereabouts.<\/p>\n

When question by police, Schauer denied any part in the victim\u2019s disappearance. However, it is alleged that Facebook messages were found on Schauer\u2019s phone telling her to \u201cstick to the story\u201d and \u201cquit talking.\u201d The messages are believed to have been sent by Vrba who later admitted that he killed Steinfeld. Vrba said that he initially tried to poison the teen<\/a> and then stabbed her in Calderas\u2019 mobile home. Schauer later admitted she was aware of the killing and helped get rid of the body.<\/p>\n

Vrba also alleged that he, Schauer and Calderas burned Steinfeld\u2019s body, placed some of the bones into a garbage bag and left the bag in a chicken coop. Schauer and Calderas said Vrba told them he had gouged out Steinfeld\u2019s eyes, stabbed her in the genitals and bragged about the killing.<\/p>\n

Calderas admitted Steinfeld was killed at her home and that she helped burn the body. She said she did not want Steinfeld dead but Schauer and Vrba claim Calderas mentioned several days earlier that she wanted Steinfeld to die.<\/p>\n

Steinfeld\u2019s sister Ashleigh Boswell said she was \u201ca very loving, outgoing person\u201d who \u201cdidn\u2019t like conflict whatsoever\u201d and she had talked to the family about undergoing gender reassignment surgery one day.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe honestly don\u2019t understand why they done it,\u201d she added. \u201cIt just don\u2019t make any sense.\u201d<\/p>\n

Officials said the killing wasn\u2019t a hate crime.<\/p>\n
