As anticipated, activist and actress Cynthia Nixon has announced her candidacy for governor of New York. Nixon released a campaign video<\/a> on Monday.<\/p>\n Said Nixon in the clip: \u201cOur leaders are letting us down.\u00a0Something has to change.\u00a0We want our government to work again, on health care, ending mass incarceration, fixing our broken subway. We are sick of politicians who care more about headlines and power than they do about us. It can\u2019t just be business as usual anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n Nixon will challenge Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo from the left. Last week, The Daily Beast reported<\/a> that Cuomo was spooked by the idea<\/a> after Mayor Bill De Blasio showed his support for Nixon:<\/p>\n The day after NY1 broke the news Nixon had met with the mayor\u2019s advisors, Cuomo scoffed that\u00a0either de Blasio or Vladimir Putin<\/a>\u00a0had put her up to it, sneering on a conference call<\/a> with reporters, \u201cI\u2019m hoping that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie and Billy Joel don\u2019t get into the race because if it\u2019s just about name recognition, that would really be a problem.\u201d<\/p>\n De Blasio, who\u2019s continually trying, and usually failing, to\u00a0boost his own standing<\/a>\u00a0as a national political player, returned the volley in a press conference hours later, calling Nixon \u201cextraordinary<\/a>\u201d and a \u201cstrong independent woman<\/a> who makes her own decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n The post Cynthia Nixon Announces Run for Governor of New York: WATCH<\/a> appeared first on Towleroad<\/a>.<\/p>\n
