They also see that the use of technology in care can help support these needs\u2014as well as improve health and wellbeing. With a vision to enhance care with technology, the organization has been using Skype in their care homes for over 10 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.somersetcare.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Somerset Care<\/a><\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\"> provides residential, nursing, and specialist dementia care\u2014as well as <\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.somersetcare.co.uk\/learning-disabilities\/realise-offices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">support<\/a><\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\"> for adults with complex needs\u2014in homes across England\u2019s Somerset county and the Isle of Wight. They understand how to assist with basic needs\u2014and beyond.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>So, i<span lang=\"EN-GB\">n 2013, Somerset Care sought even more insight into the use of technology in care. They took part in a <\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ages2.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social experiment<\/a><\/span><span lang=\"EN-GB\"> to learn how to bolster social inclusion and wellbeing in older people. One-hundred-twenty people over the age of 65 took part in this project, which brought social media platforms\u2014including Skype, email, and Facebook\u2014to participants who had never before used social media or a computer. \u201cSkype was the most used and enjoyed platform, closely followed by Facebook and then email,\u201d says Jason Shaw of Somerset Care. Sixty of the participants continued with no use of technology, but the other participants were ready to incorporate social media and computers into their lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.skype.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Somerset-Care-blog-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"436\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.skype.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Somerset-Care-blog-1.png 960w, https:\/\/blogs.skype.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Somerset-Care-blog-1-300x204.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.skype.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Somerset-Care-blog-1-768x523.png 768w, https:\/\/blogs.skype.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Somerset-Care-blog-1-900x613.png 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\"><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u201cEach of our care homes has computers for the residents to use as they please, and we\u2019ve since invested in hand-held tablets. Our residents use these in a variety of ways, including Skype, playing games, and emailing relatives,\u201d says Jason. \u201cTwo of our care homes have recently started to make Skype <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/chaturbate.com\/in\/?tour=grq0&#38;campaign=hl4zp&#38;track=gfcsb\">calls<\/a> with each other, meaning that residents from the care homes can <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/chaturbate.com\/in\/?tour=grq0&#38;campaign=hl4zp&#38;track=gfcsb\">chat<\/a> together and form new friendships.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">And Somerset Care is fully on board with this enterprise. Thanks to the findings of that 2013 social experiment and research project, they have since employed a full-time \u201cCare Technologist,\u201d a role that provides support to their care homes and residents using a variety of technologies. Technology in Care Workshops have been crafted, too, and rolled out to the homes, including one dedicated specifically to the use of Skype in care.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Residents especially enjoy the ability to contact their friends and family members. \u201cIt\u2019s particularly useful when a resident has first moved into a care home,\u201d says Jason, \u201cas this can be unsettling for the resident and their family.\u201d Many of the success stories speak for themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u201cWe encourage our residents to experiment with technology to find out what works best for them,\u201d Jason continues. \u201cOne of our residents wanted to use Skype to connect with her daughter on a more regular basis. She\u2019s hard of hearing and relies on lip reading and body language. \u2026 The issue was solved using the instant message function. During Skype <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/chaturbate.com\/in\/?tour=grq0&#38;campaign=hl4zp&#38;track=gfcsb\">video<\/a> <a title=\"\" class=\"aalmanual\" target=\"_blank\"   href=\"https:\/\/chaturbate.com\/in\/?tour=grq0&#38;campaign=hl4zp&#38;track=gfcsb\">calls<\/a>, her daughter will type instead of talking, and the resident then verbally responds.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>We love hearing <span lang=\"EN-GB\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.skype.com\/category\/stories\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">how you use Skype<\/span><\/a><\/span> to enhance the experiences of those around you.
