Actor Lee Pace, who is playing Joe Pitt in the Broadway revival of Tony Kushner\u2019s iconic play Angels in America<\/em>, was asked about his sexual orientation in a recent interview with W<\/em> magazine<\/a>.<\/p>\n The last time Pace was on Broadway was in a revival of another classic gay<\/a> play,\u00a0Larry Kramer\u2019s\u00a0The Normal Heart<\/em><\/a>, which like\u00a0Angels<\/em>\u00a0takes place at the onset of the AIDS crisis. \u201cOur understanding of what it means to be gay<\/a> is just so different,\u201d Pace said of the climate in 2018. \u201cIt\u2019s culturally different. It\u2019s just so much further down the road. It\u2019s an interesting thing for me to think about in this moment while working on this play.\u201d<\/p>\n Pace added that he feels it\u2019s important for gay<\/a> actors to play the gay<\/a> roles in both plays, but stopped short of labeling himself. He seemed a bit flustered and surprised by the question. \u201cI\u2019ve dated men<\/a>. I\u2019ve dated women<\/a>,\u201d he explained. \u201cI don\u2019t know why anyone would care. I\u2019m an actor and I play roles. To be honest, I don\u2019t know what to say\u2014I find your question intrusive.\u201d<\/p>\n Pace was accidentally outed by Ian McKellen, who identified him as gay<\/a> at the time, in a 2014 interview with a German magazine<\/p>\n The revival of Angels<\/em> comes\u00a025 years after the original in a production that was staged earlier this year by London\u2019s National Theater. Russell Tovey played \u201cJoe Pitt\u201d in that production.<\/p>\n Seven of the eight cast members are following the production except for Tovey who has a conflict.
