The Leadership and Political Power of Black Women<\/b>

As Black History Month draws to a close, and we turn toward Women\u2019s History Month, HRC is highlighting the political and electoral power of Black women<\/a>.<\/p>\n

From leaders like Diane Nash<\/a> and Rosa Parks<\/a>, at the heart of the civil rights era, to Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi, the founders of the Black Lives Matter movement<\/a>, Black women<\/a> continue to be integral forces for change.<\/p>\n

Trailblazer Shirley Chisholm<\/a>, the first African American woman<\/a> elected to Congress, paved the way for today\u2019s warriors like Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif) and Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.), who consistently advocate for LGBTQ people at the local and federal level. These incredible political leaders remind us that the fight is far from over.<\/p>\n

In her speech at the 2017 HRC National Dinner, Sen. Harris reminded everyone of the urgency of the fight for equality.<\/p>\n

\u201cFighting for everyone\u2019s civil rights is in our common interest, and in our self-interest,\u201d Harris said at the National Dinner<\/a>. \u201cNo one should be left to fight alone. No one should have to hide \u2014 not in the closets, and not in the shadows.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rep. Waters is considered by many to be one of the most powerful women<\/a> in American politics today. We are honored to have her speak at the HRC Los Angeles Dinner<\/a> on March 10.<\/p>\n

With her election to the Minneapolis City Council, Andrea Jenkins<\/a>, became the first openly transgender Black woman<\/a> to win public office in the U.S. in November last year.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s more than just having a seat at the table. It\u2019s having a seat at the table and being able to speak to power,\u201d Jenkins told Twin Cities Daily Planet<\/em>.<\/a> \u201cIt\u2019s about being present, and people knowing you will speak out against injustices. That alone will sometimes limit the number of injustices that happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Just one month later, Alabama showed the nation the power of Black women<\/a> voters. Nearly 100 percent of all Black women voters<\/a> in the special U.S. Senate election cast their vote for civil rights prosecutor Doug Jones. They were a key component of his victory over Roy Moore, the bigoted anti-LGBTQ politician twice ousted from the Alabama Supreme Court for ethics violations and recently accused of serially preying on teen<\/a> girls<\/a>.<\/p>\n

With groups<\/a> including the NAACP of Alabama<\/a> and Power of the Sister Vote<\/a>, HRC helped mobilize equality voters to secure the election of Jones<\/a> over Moore.<\/p>\n

Birmingham City Councilor Sheila Tyson<\/a> described the coalition effort simply: \u201cWe have more in common than what people think, and let\u2019s work together.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n

There are more than 500 Black women<\/a> running for office this year, according to the online database \u201cBlack Women in Politics<\/a>\u201d that compiles information about races from the local to federal level.<\/p>\n

Black women<\/a> have been too often overlooked in history books, absent from many of our narratives about the fight for equality. HRC is proud to highlight these incredible women<\/a> — just some among many of the justice warriors<\/a> without whom our movement would not be possible.<\/p>\n
