Every week, the GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend!<\/p>\n

1)<\/strong> Science-fiction film Annihilation<\/em> opened on Friday in theaters nationwide. From writer\/director Alex Garland, the film follows five women<\/a> as they venture into the mysterious Shimmer, where the unknown awaits them. One of these women<\/a> is veteran and paramedic Anya Thorensen, played by Gina Rodriguez. Rodriguez describes her character as “a paramedic from Chicago who happens to be a lesbian<\/a> and an ex-addict going into the Shimmer to be the hero that she\u2019s kinda always wanted to be.”\u00a0A major genre release that features a queer woman<\/a> as one of the main ensemble players is something that needs to happen more often.\u00a0Annihilation<\/em> is now playing in theaters.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

2)<\/strong> Also opening this weekend is Every Day, <\/em>the fantasy romance based on the novel by out author David Levithan. Every Day<\/em> is a love story between a teenage<\/a> girl<\/a> and \u201cA,\u201d a person who wakes up in a different body every day. This includes men<\/a>, women<\/a>, and one day as a trans<\/a> teen<\/a> played by out trans<\/a> actor Ian Alexander (The OA<\/em>). Directed by out filmmaker Michael Suscy, the film spreads the message that love is more powerful than appearance or gender. Every Day<\/em> is out in theaters now.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

3)<\/strong> The 2018 BAFTA Awards were announced last weekend. LGBTQ-inclusive wins include James Ivory for Adapted Screenplay of queer coming-of-age romance Call Me By Your Name,<\/em>\u00a0Korean lesbian<\/a> thriller\/romance The Handmaiden <\/em>for Film Not in The English Language, the\u00a0documentary on gay<\/a> author and activist James Baldwin I Am Not Your Negro<\/em> for Documentary,\u00a0and Coco <\/em>for Animated Film, which was co-written and co-directed by Adrian Molina, an out gay<\/a> man<\/a>. 4)<\/strong> Disney Channel\u2019s popular show Andi Mack<\/em> has been renewed for a third season<\/a>!\u00a0The GLAAD Media Award-nominated series broke ground last year when one of the main characters, Cyrus, came out as gay<\/a>. Having a gay<\/a> character in a major role in a show aimed at such a wide young audience is a much needed step in the right direction, and with season three, viewers will be able to see more of Cyrus\u2019 story unfold. In other renewal news, NBC renewed comedy Superstore <\/em>for a fourth season.<\/a> The ensemble of the workplace comedy includes out comedian and actor Nico Santos as Mateo, a gay<\/a> employee of the store.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

5)<\/strong> A new trailer has been released for season three of Shadowhunters.<\/em><\/a> The trailer shows the new threat of Lillith, plus glimpses of fan favorite couple<\/a>, Alec and Magnus. The new season of Shadowhunters <\/em>premieres on March 20th<\/sup>. Another trailer out this week is for the second season of NBC\u2019s Timeless<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0<\/i>the sci-fi adventure drama that was cancelled then immediately saved by the network. The show includes the character of Denise Christopher, a special agent assigned to the team, who also has a wife and child. Timeless<\/em> returns March 11th<\/sup> on NBC.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

6)<\/strong> The first casting news has been announced for The CW\u2019s upcoming Charmed <\/em>reboot<\/a>. The character of Mel, a lesbian<\/a> witch described as \u201ca passionate, outspoken activist who loses her way in the wake of family tragedy,\u201d will be played by Melonie Diaz of The Breaks<\/em> and Fruitvale Station. <\/em>In other casting news out bisexual<\/a> actor\u00a0Natalie Morales has been cast in the lead of new pilot, Abby\u2019s<\/em><\/a>, a show about an unlicensed bar and its patrons. She will play the titular Abby, a military veteran turned bartender.<\/p>\n

7)<\/strong> Actor and advocate Laverne Cox just released her first single \u201cBeat For the Gods\u201d and an accompanying music video<\/a>. Cox told Out Magazine<\/em> she made the song as a\u00a0“celebration of queer culture and LGBTQ club culture<\/a>.”\u00a0The video<\/a> stars queer and trans<\/a> talent, including actor Trace Lysette. The song is available to stream and purchase now, and the video<\/a> is below!<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

8)<\/strong> The track list of the soundtrack to Disney and Ava DuVernay\u2019s A Wrinkle In Time <\/em>was released earlier this week<\/a>. The adaptation of the popular young adult novel will feature six original songs, including songs by out artists Kehlani and Sia. The soundtrack will be available on March 9th<\/sup>, the same day the film is released into theaters. You can hear part of Kehlani\u2019s track \u201cLet Me Live\u201d in the trailer below.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

10)<\/strong> The next song and video<\/a> in out singer Matt Palmer\u2019s visual EP Get Lost<\/em> was released Thursday. The newest track \u201cThe Worst,\u201d continues to tell the story of a relationship between two men<\/a> played by Palmer and out model Max Emerson, and this newest chapter focuses on their breakup. The song is available to stream and download, and Get Lost <\/a><\/em>can be pre-ordered here. <\/a>The full album will be out March 9th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

11)<\/strong> Harvey Fierstein\u2019s play Torch Song<\/em>, which originally was staged in 1978<\/a> before transferring to Broadway in in the early \u201880s, will be making its return this fall. The Tony Award-winning play follows Arnold Beckoff, a gay<\/a> Jewish drag queen and singer living in New York in the \u201870s and \u201880s. Having a queer protagonist of such a successful play in that time was breaking new ground. The revival will premiere on November 1st, and stars out Broadway star Michael Urie.<\/p>\n

12)<\/strong> Lingua Franca<\/em>, a film currently seeking funding, follows an undocumented trans<\/a> Filipina woman<\/a> who falls in love with a Russian-Jewish man<\/a> on Coney Island. In addition to being a love story, the film also delves into the anxiety of being an immigrant and a trans<\/a> woman<\/a> of color in today\u2019s political climate. With a largely immigrant crew, the film seeksto provide\u00a0increased visibility to underrepresented groups in Hollywood.
