NEW YORK –\u00a0<\/strong>GLAAD, the world\u2019s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, released the following research to shine a light on past anti-LGBTQ statements from speakers at the 2018 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) and call<\/a> on media to put the conference into proper context by reporting on the anti-LGBTQ records of the activists and public officials speaking at the event.<\/p>\n

\u201cPresident Trump never misses an opportunity to court anti-LGBTQ organizations and activists who target the LGBTQ community,\u201d said Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD<\/strong>. \u201cThe Trump White House is leading a multi-front culture war against the LGBTQ community by continuously addressing large gatherings of anti-LGBTQ activists, fighting for the discriminatory transgender military ban, and pushing religious exemptions to legalize discrimination against LGBTQ people.\u201d<\/p>\n

President Trump and Vice President Pence, along with other White House officials, will share the stage with Rep. Barry Loudermilk who compared<\/a> the Supreme Court\u2019s marriage equality decision to the Dred Scott opinion upholding slavery, and Laura Ingraham who likens<\/a> medical necessary transgender healthcare to \u201cchild abuse,\u201d and many other anti-LGBTQ activists.<\/p>\n

President Donald J. Trump:<\/em>
Staffed his administration with <\/strong>anti-trans<\/strong><\/a> advocates<\/strong><\/a>, <\/strong>holds close ties<\/strong><\/a> to anti-LGBTQ hate groups, and <\/strong>recently created<\/strong><\/a> a new religious and conscience exemptions division in the HHS<\/strong> to defend health workers who refused to treat LGBTQ patients.<\/p>\n

Vice President Mike Pence:<\/em>
Has been credited as the \u201c<\/strong>driving force<\/strong><\/a>\u201d of the transgender military ban and has <\/strong>supported<\/strong><\/a> the dangerous and discredited practice of conversion therapy.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Secretary Betsy DeVos:<\/em>
Rolled back<\/strong><\/a> Title IX protections for transgender students and <\/strong>stopped investigating<\/strong><\/a> civil rights complaints from transgender students barred from school bathrooms that match their gender identity. The DeVos family has also <\/strong>funded anti-LGBTQ organizations<\/strong><\/a> ranging from Focus on the Family, which openly advocates for so-called “conversion therapy,” to Bethany Christian Services, an adoption agency that excludes LGBTQ parents and advocates for laws that allow them to do so.<\/p>\n

Secretary Rick Perry:<\/em>
Wrote<\/strong><\/a> an op-ed directly attacking Texas A&M University for allowing a student to serve as the university’s first openly LGBTQ student body president <\/strong>and has compared being LGBTQ to alcoholism (multiple<\/a> times<\/a>)<\/p>\n

Secretary Ryan Zinke:<\/em>
Opposes<\/strong><\/a> adoption by same-sex<\/a> couples<\/a><\/strong> and revoked<\/a> the National Park Services sponsorship of New York City’s first permanent Pride Flag, located outside of the historic Stonewall Inn.<\/p>\n

KellyAnne Conway:<\/em>
Along with President\u00a0Trump, Kellyanne Conway <\/strong>spoke<\/strong><\/a> at the\u00a0<\/strong>Family Reseach Council<\/strong><\/a>‘s Values\u00a0Voter Summit<\/strong>, a convening of fringe groups united around discrimination against\u00a0LGBTQ people she also suggested<\/strong><\/a> that referring to someone\u2019s LGBTQ identity is comparable to referring them as a slut<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Laura Ingraham:<\/em>
Calls<\/strong><\/a> transgender healthcare \u201cchild abuse\u201d and <\/strong>argued<\/strong><\/a> that marriage equality would lead to \u201cpolyamory\u201d and incest. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Ben Shapiro:<\/em>
Insists<\/strong><\/a> \u201ctransgender is a mental disease\u201d and <\/strong>attacked<\/strong><\/a> the U.S. Supreme Court for striking down laws criminalizing homosexuality.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Deneen Borelli:<\/em>
Insists<\/strong><\/a> the Obama administration \u201cseemed to side with the gay<\/a> lobby over black moral values\u201d in supporting marriage values.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sean Hannity:<\/em>
Was fired from a local radio show for <\/strong>peddling extreme and derogatory myths<\/strong><\/a> about LGBTQ people including that LGBTQ people are \u201cprone to disease\u201d and that homosexuality is like \u201cplaying in a sewer.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mick Mulvaney:<\/em>
Cosponsor<\/strong><\/a> of the so-called First Amendment Defense Act, designed to allow anti-LGBTQ people to discriminate for religious without any recourse and oversaw the Trump Administration\u2019s <\/strong>first budget proposal<\/strong><\/a> that included slashes to programs and departments critical to the LGBTQ community<\/strong>, including Medicaid, Planned Parenthood, and the Center for Disease Control\u2019s HIV and AIDS programs.<\/p>\n

Sen. Ted Cruz:<\/em>
Fought hard against<\/strong><\/a> transgender nondiscrimination protections, <\/strong>called<\/strong><\/a> federal marriage equality “both tragic and indefensible,”<\/strong> and has argued<\/a> that homosexuality is a choice.<\/p>\n

Gov. Paul LePage:<\/em>
Joined<\/strong><\/a> lawsuit fighting to roll back non-discrimination protections transgender youth and <\/strong>repeatedly attacked<\/strong><\/a> a political opponent with a homophobic slur. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Rick Harrison:<\/em>
Host of a TV show called Pawn Stars who has <\/strong>fear-mongered against transgender women<\/strong><\/a>: \u201cYou have some cities that are saying that if you have a man<\/a> who feels like he’s a woman<\/a>, he can use the women<\/a>’s restroom. I guarantee you that will be taken advantage of by some very bad men<\/a> who want to go into a bathroom where there’s young ladies<\/a>.”<\/p>\n

Kay Coles James:<\/em>
Former Senior Vice President of the exceedingly anti-LGBTQ Family Research Council, former dean of Pat Robertson\u2019s Regent University, and current head of the anti-LGBTQ Heritage Foundation; reportedly compared<\/strong><\/a> LGBTQ people to addicts, alcoholics, adult users, and \u201csinful\u201d people.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tom Borelli:<\/em>
Promoted<\/strong><\/a> the American Family Association\u2019s boycott of Target over transgender accommodations<\/strong>, insisting \u201cthat the retail giant was henceforth throwing open its restroom doors to the gender-confused\u201d<\/p>\n

Marion Le Pen:<\/em>
Staunch marriage equality opponent who <\/strong>spoke at anti-equality rallies<\/strong><\/a> in France and c<\/strong>laims<\/strong><\/a> it will lead to polygamy:<\/strong> “Once you break away from the natural framework of a man<\/a> and a woman<\/a>, you could have other minorities who want their form of love recognised by the state. If you endorse homosexuality [in marriage], why not polygamy?”<\/p>\n

Sheriff David Clarke Jr:<\/em> \u00a0

Sponsored a bill<\/strong><\/a> that would have invalidated LGBTQ nondiscrimination ordinances throughout the state of West Virginia.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Grant Strobl:<\/em>
Started identifying as<\/strong><\/a> \u201cHis Majesty\u201d as protest against his university\u2019s policy on allowing and respecting students\u2019 choice of person pronouns.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Viciously anti-LGBTQ congressman who <\/strong>is credited as<\/strong><\/a> being a key figure behind Trump\u2019s transgender military ban. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Chairman Mark Walker<\/em>:
Exceedingly anti-LGBTQ congressman who <\/strong>authored the joint lette<\/strong><\/a>r that anti-LGBTQ conservatives sent to the Obama administration in protestation of its public school bathroom guidance. <\/strong><\/p>\n

AG Leslie Rutledge:<\/em>
Fought against<\/strong><\/a> an LGBTQ nondiscrimination ordinance in Fayetteville and <\/strong>against<\/strong><\/a> transgender bathroom accommodations.<\/strong><\/p>\n
