Time\u2019s up for DTF<\/b><\/p>\n

Journalist Jasmine Lobe, who bravely spoke about harassment at the hands of Harvey Weinstein, reflects on the past, present and future of\u00a0DTF<\/strong><\/h4>\n

My neighbor and I had a thing. I was in apartment 205 and he was in 206. He\u2019d invite me over for late-night movies. I\u2019d make up reasons to stop by. Did he have any olive oil or\u00a0salt?<\/p>\n

The hooking up was hot, but I noticed a trend: he only really wanted me after a night of drinking. He\u2019d usually knock on my door at 4\u00a0a.m.<\/p>\n

When I told him I had feelings for him, the knocking\u00a0stopped.<\/p>\n

He moved on quickly. He conveniently started hooking up with the woman<\/a> in apartment 207. I\u2019d hear them in the hallway giggling. I\u2019d press my ear against my wall (her bedroom was on the other side) and my heart would stop. I\u2019d blast music and try not to\u00a0cry.<\/p>\n

I wasn\u2019t the \u201ccool\u201d girl<\/a> who was DTF. I was emotional. I had feelings. I was\u00a0\u201cweak.\u201d<\/p>\n

But I could never win, because if I had been \u201ccool\u201d enough to be DTF, I\u2019d still feel disrespected.<\/p>\n

According to one urban dictionary definition, DTF \u201crefers to a nasty, slutty whore who is willing to go home with some random guy<\/a> she just met (in most cases the girl<\/a> is drunk but not always) and fuck<\/a>. Afterward, the girl<\/a> will sometimes leave on her own but in most cases the guy<\/a> will kick her out once he\u2019s been satisfied.\u201d Thankfully, attitudes are changing and the stigma attached to singles, particularly women<\/a>, who are<\/em> looking for something casual has finally begun to lift. But there\u2019s still a lot to be done to protect, and empower, people to hook up, date, and communicate on their own\u00a0terms.<\/p>\n

The #MeToo movement has opened the floodgates for women<\/a> (myself included<\/a>) to name their harassers and be believed, but it\u2019s bigger than that\u200a\u2014\u200ait\u2019s systemic. It\u2019s time to unravel patriarchy and that\u2019s certainly going to affect dating, too. OkCupid\u2019s on to that in a big way with their new campaign that is #DTFixDating<\/a>. If you can\u2019t get rid of DTF, then make it your own so the power\u2019s in your\u00a0hands.<\/p>\n

I caught up with a few women<\/a> I admire about their views on DTF\u200a\u2014\u200ahow it makes them feel, and what it means to redefine\u00a0it.<\/p>\n

Whitney Eden<\/strong> works for an advertising agency. I\u2019m a big fan of her biting blog, DoYouEvenTinderBro.com<\/a>, where she posts sexist texts she receives via dating apps. She\u2019s holding these guys<\/a> accountable because their actions don\u2019t take place in a \u201cvacuum.\u201d<\/p>\n

Whitney has tried different dating apps but likes OkCupid best because it gives her more information so there\u2019s a richer background. One has to match before messages can be sent to inboxes, which weeds out the \u201cheadless dudes\u201d and in her case, filters out the far right. She says, \u201cIf you believe women<\/a> shouldn\u2019t have contraceptive rights, we should never go\u00a0out.\u201d<\/p>\n

She thinks OkCupid\u2019s new campaign is a great start, but only marks the beginning of a long, much-needed battle to change the meaning in a culture where the traditional meaning of DTF is so ingrained.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor the longest time women<\/a> were afraid to say, \u2018I\u2019m not looking for a no-strings-attached relationship.\u2019 You\u2019re not cool if you voice that, and men<\/a> take advantage of it. And while women<\/a> are used to placating men<\/a>\u2019s egos, the current climate has empowered women<\/a> to listen to their own voices. \u2018Do I want to have sex<\/a>? Or am I going to have sex<\/a> because he wants to have\u00a0sex<\/a>.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not just women<\/a> who are affected by DTF\u2019s toxicity. Whitney adds, \u201cMen are still beholden to heteronormative gender roles, but I think there is more acceptance now. You can be a man<\/a> and have feelings\u200a\u2014\u200abasically, you can be a human\u00a0being.\u201d<\/p>\n

As to how Whitney would reappropriate DTF, she says, \u201cI\u2019m down to fight patriarchy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Francesca Vuillemin<\/strong> is a Fashion Market Editor at Reserved Magazine<\/em>, which recently launched their \u201cEqual Means Equal\u201d ad, a push for equal pay for women<\/a> in media. She\u2019s also a kick-ass<\/a> astrologer, a dear friend\u200a\u2014\u200aand was my date to OkCupid\u2019s launch celebration for their new campaign. We took \u201cupside down\u201d pictures in their photo booth (the clouds were at our feet and flowers above our heads) to overturn the old DTF narrative. We pretended to fall from the sky, flailing our arms\u200a\u2014\u200awhich proved difficult for the photographer to capture. He finally politely asked us to be still and strike a\u00a0pose.<\/p>\n

We browsed the ads screened on the surrounding walls, while drinking vodka cucumber cocktails. Francesca was particularly struck by the playfulness and tender connection in the ads \u201crather than just expressing one\u2019s carnal side.\u201d For instance, a woman<\/a> carrying another woman<\/a> with a red rose, gazing into her eyes, stood against a bright pink, background in one of the\u00a0images.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe problem with DTF is it\u2019s been framed from the man<\/a>\u2019s perspective,\u201d Francesca said. \u201cAnd for me, the reappropriation of DTF would certainly be more about bonding, but would also create space for women<\/a> who just want to have casual, consensual sex<\/a>, to do so without the\u00a0stigma.\u201d<\/p>\n

Women\u2019s voices are being heard now more than ever which allows for a shifting narrative for both men<\/a> and women<\/a>. \u201cThe times are changing, allowing men<\/a> to express their feminine sides and women<\/a> to express their sexual sides without judgment.\u201d<\/p>\n

As to how she would reappropriate DTF, she says \u201cDown to feel a deep spiritual connection.\u201d<\/p>\n

Keren Eldad<\/strong> is a celebrity life and dating coach<\/a> whom I had the pleasure of working with. I tried her Date With Enthusiasm<\/em> program and it worked! (I\u2019m dating someone very special.) She\u2019s all about switching the narrative in your head. I had to work on my self- worth and shift my own negative patterning from \u201cI don\u2019t deserve\u201d to \u201cI\u00a0do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Keren thinks OkCupid\u2019s Wieden + Kennedy campaign has \u201chit the nail on the head\u201d by \u201chacking DTF and changing the\u00a0story.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWieden + Kennedy has done an excellent job at stage one: Distract. When you have a train going 100 miles an hour at a tree you cannot just stop it. You must divert it. So [likening DTF to a runaway train] reappropriating the F is a great first step. You deserve not just \u2018better\u2019 you deserve \u2018exactly what you\u00a0want.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Keren advises singles to keep the movement in motion by \u201cminding your own vibe\u201d and coining your own phase, whether it\u2019s Down to find love, or simply Down to\u00a0love.<\/p>\n

These three women<\/a> I spoke with all have different histories, different goals, different wants\u2014in love and in life. But they can all agree that changing the meaning of the F in DTF is the first step. Whether it\u2019s Down to fight patriarchy, Down to find a deep spiritual connection, or Down to Love \u2014now, I\u2019m down with all\u00a0that.<\/p>\n
